32934. Donald William Haskell

The Orlando Sentinel (FL)
May 10, 2004

Donald W. Haskell wasn't the kind of hero to have newspaper stories written about him, his widow said, but he was a man who rushed to follow his two big brothers into the military as soon he was old enough back in World War II. And he was a man who spent his life honoring the American flag and this country's soldiers, she said.

Haskell, 76, of Orlando died Thursday. He had a longtime heart ailment, his wife, Ruth Haskell, said. Don Haskell quit high school in 1944 in his hometown of Syracuse, N.Y., to follow brothers Gerald and George to war. "My husband was one of these people who said 'This is my country, and I'll fight for it,' " she said. Don Haskell joined the Navy's Seabees, the members of construction battalions made famous by the John Wayne film The Fighting Seabees. He attained the rank seaman first class and served in the South Pacific, riding shotgun on bulldozers carving out roads and airfields, and cooking meals for the troops.

He never went into battle, Ruth Haskell said, but whenever he saw Old Glory waving, he was "as proud as a peacock. And he hated anyone who talked against his country."

He never did finish school, she said, but went right to work, taking a variety of jobs and eventually owning his own restaurant called Lamont Grill, outside of Syracuse, and raised three children. It was there in his later years he met his second wife, Ruth, to whom he was married for 25 years.

The Haskells moved to Orlando in the late 1970s, and Don Haskell worked for a car rental company. He also became active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4287 and traveled the state to march in parades, honor veterans and perform honor-guard duty at funerals for veterans.

"It was his big love," Ruth Haskell said. "I can't tell you how many parades he marched in."

When his health didn't allow him to carry the flag, he served in other ways, such as having lasagna-dinner fund-raisers for VFW activities.

Besides Ruth Haskell of Orlando, his survivors include a daughter, Donna Lannon of Shortsville, N.Y.; and three sons, Paul of Baldwinsville, N.Y., Anthony of Liverpool, N.Y., and Edward of Liberty, Mo.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Plans for a memorial service were not complete Sunday, but arrangements are being handled by Woodlawn Funeral Home. Ruth Haskell said she plans to have her husband's remains cremated and buried at sea.

In the 1900 census George is enumerated with his uncle Alfred Tuckerman. Since Alfred is widowed it is not clear whether George is nephew of Alfred or his wife.

In his declaration of dependents in WWI draft on June 5, 1917, he listes no father, no mother.

The death index for New York lists a Harris D. Haskell and a Carrie T. Haskill dying in Cortland county in 1898. Could Carrie T. be Carrie Tuckerman?, mother of George?
