Carlton E. Chase, 88, of 424 Maria Elena St., died today at Brownsville Medical Center.

A native of Bedford Mass., he was retired from the U.S. Army and had worked at Brownsville funeral homes for 10 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Dixon Chase and Mrs. Mary Alice Chase; two sons, Carlos and Raymundo Chase, all of Brownsville, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Chase was a native of San Fernando, Tamps., Mexico. She had lived in Brownsville 55 years.

Survivors include her husband, Carlton 'Jake' Chase; one daughter, Mary Alice in two sons, Raymundo and Charles Chase.

Ada Lorraine Calnen, 92 of Enfield, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Thursday, (October 24, 2013) at Parkway Pavilion. Born May 19, 1921 in New Bedford, MA, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Geneva (Fratipietro) Borden. Ada was a long time resident of Enfield and was a communicant of Holy Family Church.

Ada loved to travel, both nationally and abroad as an Air Force wife. In her free time, Ada received great joy from time spent in her garden and being friendly with her neighbors. She had a great affection for pets and was the loving parent of many dogs.

Ada will be greatly missed by her four sons, Dr. Terry Calnen of Latrobe, PA, Dr. Jerry Calnen and his wife, JoAnn of Enfield, CT, Timothy Calnen and his wife, Martha of East Berlin, CT, and Peter Calnen and his wife, Elizabeth of Simsbury, CT; her grandchildren; and her four great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and her husband of over 50 years, Timothy Calnen, Ada was preceded in death by her sister, Bernice Thistlewaite.

JAMES F. GOLDRICK JR., 88, of Lynn, Mass., a retired building inspector, died Saturday at home after an illness.

He was the husband of the late Helen (Smith) Goldrick.

Born in New Bedford, a son of the late James F. and Ethel (Borden) Goldrick, he had lived in New Bedford most of his life before moving to Magnolia, Mass., and then to Lynn. Mr. Goldrick was a building inspector for the City of New Bedford until he retired. He had been a business agent for the Sheet Metal Union in New Bedford. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in Africa with the Seabees and was a member of VFW Post 1531, New Bedford. He enjoyed painting and drawing.

He leaves a son, James F. Goldrick III, and a daughter, Clara Ann Doyle, both of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, William Goldrick of Acushnet, Mass.; two sisters, Annie Porter of Mattapoisett, Mass., and Ethel Chase of East Providence; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Everett, Robert and Edna Goldrick.

New Bedford �  William W. Goldrick, 89, of Acushnet died at New Bedford Health Care Center on October 21, 2003 after a brief illness. He was the husband of Jacqueline P. (Senesac) Goldrick. They were married for 59 years.

He was born in New Bedford son of the late James F. and Ethel G. (Borden) Goldrick and resided in Acushnet for the past 50 years. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1933. He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church, Acushnet. He was employed as a bus driver by the former Union Street Railway Company, New Bedford until his retirement in 1978.

Mr. Goldrick was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II having served as a Staff Sergeant in the 221st Field Artillery during the campaigns at Guadalcanal, Bougainville and the Northern Solomons. He was a member of the Americal Division Veteran Association and the Amalgamated Transit Union. He enjoyed model trains, taking cruises and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son: Stephen P. Goldrick of Plymouth; 2 sisters: Anne Margaret Porter of Mattapoisett and Ethel Chase of Riverside, RI; 3 grandchildren: Shawn M. Goldrick of RI, Randy D. Goldrick of Fairhaven and Nathan W. Goldrick of Fairhaven; 2 great-grandchildren: Corey Goldrick and Chelsey Goldrick both of Fairhaven; and several nieces & nephews.

He was brother of the late James F. Goldrick, Robert N. Goldrick, Everett Goldrick and Edna Goldrick.

ACUSHNET —  Emma Elizabeth "Jean" J. (Sutcliffe) Goldrick, 85, died peacefully on Thursday, November 20, 2008, with family members present. She was the wife of the late Lt. Col. Robert N. Goldrick.

Born in Puerto Rico, grew up in Tennessee with her mother, Lena Sutcliffe, she returned to Puerto Rico to live with her father, LeGrande Sutcliffe. Married in 1942, she returned to her husband's hometown, New Bedford, for the duration of World War II. As a career Army officer's wife, "Jean" held her family together through numerous postings world wide from Okinawa to Germany and to many Army bases across the United States.

Among her many accomplishments, she was a licensed practical nurse, taught American Sign Language, volunteered with American Red Cross, was a den mother and world traveler.

She was a noted Harlequin romance novelist, whose many books were translated and published in 28 languages. Emma was a member of the American Romance Writer's Guild.

She was the loving mother of 4 children: Michael R. Goldrick and his wife, Jane F. Conway of Westport, David L. Goldrick and his wife, Lenora R. Pennington of Acushnet, Jeanne E. Goldrick of Fall River and Robert F. Goldrick and his wife, Valarie A. Goldrick of South Bend, OR; beloved sister of Jacqueline Razzano of Wilmington, NC; devoted grandmother to 8 wonderful boys; caring sister-in-law of Jackie Goldrick of Acushnet and Ethel Chase of E. Providence, RI; and proud aunt of many nieces and nephews.

She was sister of the late Marion "Sally" Sutcliffe.

Mr. Lake was born in New Bedford, a son of the late Elmer E. and Sarah A. (Jennings) Lake, and resided in the area for most of his life. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a truck driver for various construction companies in the area.

He is survived by a son: William Lake of Middleboro, MA; 3 daughters: Doreen Leonard of Stuart, FL, Sandra Libby of Port St. Lucy, FL and Elaine Booker of New Bedford; a brother: Raymond B. Lake of Dartmouth; 9 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Rev. Earle B. Luscombe, 69, of 101 Starbuck lane, Yarmouth, a Methodist minister, died yesterday at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

He was formerly of Wareham and moved to Yarmouth two years ago.

Born in New Bedford, he attended schools in that city and was graduated from Brothers College in Madison, N.J., and the Hartford Seminary Foundation in Hartford, Conn.

Rev. Mr. Luscombe served in churches at Wellfleet, Eastham, Cohasset, Hull, Wareham and Marion as well as churches in northern New York and New Hampshire.

He was a member and past president of the Lions Club and a member of Natascot Lodge, AF & AM, in addition to various church organizations. The ecumenical movement was one of his greatest interests.

Surviving are his wife, Florence (Lyons); two sons, Earle L., of Hadfield, N.J., and George A. of Brewster, and two grandchildren.

HUGH E. SCHMIDT, 83, of Bayonet Point died Saturday at Bear Creek Nursing Home in Hudson. A native of New Bedford, Mass., he moved to this area 20 years ago from South Yarmouth, Mass. He was a retired executive in the textile industry and member of the Beacon Woods Golf Association in Bayonet Point.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica; two daughters, Nancy Collins of Marston Mills, Mass., and Kathleen Baldwin of Annapolis, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Ralph Frederick Schmidt, 88, of Greenville, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011. Born in New Bedford, MA, he was the youngest of five sons of the late Hugo and Clara Taber Schmidt.

Mr. Schmidt moved to Greenville, SC in 1950 to expand the family textile business southward. He was chairman and CEO of The Schmidt Group, Inc. During his tenure in Greenville, he also served for many years on the Board of Directors at BB&T bank. In 1968, he founded and became the first captain of the Hejaz Flying Nobles, a Shrine unit that provided air transportation for burned and crippled children. As an avid pilot, he served as past chairman of the S. C. Aeronautics Commission for a total of 15 years under three South Carolina governors. As a tireless advocate for Greenville business, Mr. Schmidt was honored by the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce for his work in establishing an inland Customs Port at the GSP International Airport.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Vaughan Schmidt.

Surviving are his children, daughter, Linda Schmidt; sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Joye Schmidt, and Vincent and Meredith Schmidt; and stepson, Roger Coker and wife, Cindy; his grandchildren, Vaughan Schmidt (Cathy), Austin Schmidt (Lindsay), Mark Schmidt (Melinda), Stephen Schmidt (Brooke), Tyler Catlett and Alexis Schmidt; his great-grandchildren, Cody, Caden, Ellie, Ansley and Ben; his former wife and mother of Vincent, Judy Richardson; and his former wife, Mary Jo Schmidt.
