Volume 14, No. 4, December 2005G. CLARENCE "CLARRY" HASKELL, 91, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA, died 30 June 2005 after a short battle with cancer. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Ross) Haskell,.
Born in New Bedford, son of Isaac F. Haskell Jr. and Lillian R. (Simmons) Haskell, Mr. Haskell was an outstanding athlete. Known at New Bedford High School as the "Crimson Express", he was a member of Van Camps High School All-American Football Team and named "Most Valuable Player" in the New England M.I.T. Basketball Tournament. In 1929 his American Legion Baseball team won the Massachusetts State Championship.
Mr. Haskell attended Notre Dame University on a football scholarship; some considered him the finest football player from New England, and he was among the first inductees into the New Bedford High's Gridiron Club Hall of Fame. However, a serious auto accident interrupted his sports career mid-university, after which he coached and played only semi-pro football before becoming a car salesman until retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane M. Haskell of New Bedford and Lori Bowman of New Hampshire, several grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. His three sons: Gordon C., Jr., Thomas, and James K. Haskell, had predeceased him.
Interment in the Friends Cemetery at Dartmouth.

January 29, 1995Mae Devoll Dietrich, 97, of Manchester Presbyterian Lodge, and formerly of 3723 W. 32nd St., died Friday, Jan. 27, 1995, at Hamot Medical Center.
She was born in New Bedford, Mass., Nov. 16, 1897, a daughter of the late Edgar Henry and Elizabeth Duchaney Devoll.
She had been a schoolteacher in Bath, Cornell, and White Plains, N.Y., and Claymont, Del., for 25 years. She retired in 1961 and came to Erie from Claymont, seven years ago. She was a member of the Church of the Cross and the Millcreek Council of Republican Women. She enjoyed writing in her diary and knitting Afghans and quilts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Adam Dietrich, in 1987, and a son, Charles Melvin Dietrich, in 1989.
She is survived by twin daughters: Mrs. Frederick (Louise) Schulze and Mrs. William (Lucille) Peterson, both of Erie; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

February 21, 2010Malcolm Haskell of Plainville, a store clerk, died Feb. 14 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro after becoming ill at home. He was 84.
Born in Boston, Mr. Haskell lived in Foxboro, Marlboro and Holliston before moving to Plainville in April 2007.
Mr. Haskell held several jobs throughout his career, including being employed as a stock clerk by CVS Pharmacy in Northboro for five years.
While living in Marlboro, Mr. Haskell was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church. He enjoyed engaging others in conversation, going out for a good cup of coffee, playing the harmonica, swimming, drawing, feeding ducks and visiting the North Attleboro National Fish Hatchery.
Mr. Haskell is survived by many friends.

PLAINVILLE- Malcolm Haskell, 84, of Mirimichi Street, Plainville, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 upon arrival at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro after having been stricken ill at his residence.Born in Boston, Massachusetts on July 13, 1925, Mr. Haskell resided in Plainville since April 2007, having previously lived in Foxboro, Marlboro and Holliston.
He held several jobs throughout his career, including being employed as a stock clerk by CVS Pharmacy in Northboro for five years.
While residing in Marlboro, Mr. Haskell was a communicant of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church.
He treasured the time spent with his beloved friends, and was a very social man who enjoyed engaging others in conversation and going out for a good cup of coffee.
Mr. Haskell enjoyed playing the harmonica, swimming, drawing and visits to the North Attleboro National Fish Hatchery and to farms, where he loved visiting with the animals. His favorite pastime was feeding ducks.
Mr. Haskell leaves his devoted caregivers and many friends.

He was the husband of Norma (Barriteau) Stowell.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Asa and Edna Stowell, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Stowell was formerly employed by the New Bedford Housing Authority for many years until retirement. Prior to that, he was the proprietor of Russ & Bill's Restaurant in Weld's Square.
He enjoyed spending time with his family. Mr. Stowell served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal.Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, William Stowell, Jr., and his wife Victoria, Patrick Stowell and Steven Stowell, and his wife Yvonne, all of New Bedford; a daughter, Beth Rocha, and her husband Gary, of Acushnet; a sister, Dorothy Hicks of New Bedford; 3 grandchildren, William, III, Jacob and Benjamin; several nieces and nephews.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Edna M. (Haskell) and Asa T. Stowell, Jr., she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
Mrs. Hicks was employed as a home health aide for the Kennedy-Donovan Center for many years.

Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Alfred, Sr. and Mary (Correia) Cunha he lived most of his life in the area.
Alfred worked as a foreman in the fishing industry and was well known on the waterfront. He loved going on trips to New Hampshire and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Kimberly Pacheco and her husband James of Acushnet; five sons, Alfred Cunha, III of New Bedford, John Cunha and his wife Cynthia of New Bedford, George Cunha and his wife Sue of Acushnet, Gary Cunha and his wife Donna of New Bedford and David Reed of New Bedford.
He was the father of the late Rosemarie Moniz and Paul Reed and the brother of the late Richard "Red" Cunha.

Mrs. Soares was born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Rescome F. and Myrtle E. (Braley) Haskell, and resided in the greater New Bedford area most of her life, living the past 10 years in Florida. She was a former member of the Acushnet-Wesley United Methodist Church, Acushnet. Her greatest love was her family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter: Joanne J. Rezendes of New Bedford; two sons: Anthony R. Soares and Fernando G. Fernando G. "Fred" Soares, 64, of New Bedford died after a long illness November 10, 2005 at Morton Hospital. He was the widower of Betty Jean (Haskell) Soares.
Mr. Soares was born in St. Michael, Azores, Portugal, son of Sophie (Botelho) Soares of Fairhaven and the late John G. Soares. He resided most of his life in Fairhaven, living for 10 years in Florida and returning to New Bedford in 2004.
Mr. Soares served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a fish cutter in various local fish houses for many years and later became the Business Agent for the Seafood Worker's Union in New Bedford. He enjoyed carpentry and hunting.
In addition to his mother he is survived by a daughter: Joanne J. Rezendes of Taunton; two sons: Anthony R. Soares of Port St. Lucie, FL and Fernando G. He was a history buff, enjoyed dancing and spending time with his family and friends.

She was a member of the Pacific Union Congregational Church in Westport.
Mrs. Potter was a member of the Westport Womans Club, Westport Historical Society, Westport Republican Town Committee, Westport Art Group and the Noquochoke Senior Citizens. She was also a member of the Interchurch Council of Greater New Bedford, the New Bedford Womens Club, Greater New Bedford Book Club, the Paskamansett Bird Club, the Glass Society of New Bedford and the New Bedford Womans Christian Association.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing the piano.
She leaves two sons, Jonathan H. Potter Jr. and Richard P. Potter, both of Westport; a daughter, Jean B. Potter Murphy of Kearsage, N.H.; a stepsister, Rhoda Motta of East Falmouth, Mass.; and a granddaughter.
