56248. Charles Joseph Hurl

6/21/15 - Dorothy Hurl Cuccinatta wrote this about her dad, Charles Hurl:

"When he was a small child his mother left him and his sister in the care of a friend of hers. He had very little contact with his mother during his life and told us that he guessed his mother paid her friend to raise him.

Never knew his father. He enlisted in WWI when he was 33 yrs old. He was so tall he had to wait weeks for them to get him a uniform to fit. He was a horse-shoer and spent most of the war in France. He was a bachelor until 42 yrs of age when he married my mother.

He drove a horse and wagon, delivering barrels filled with whatever, from the fish pier to places around Boston. Every Friday he came in the door and handed his pay to my mother. She would give him some change to buy his stogies, a little brown cigar that he smoked all the time and would eventually kill him. My mother ruled the roost and he was very happy to abide by those rules.. He never raised his hands or his voice to us kids or to my mother. His whole life was us kids...his family. Every night he and my mother sat at the kitchen table and played cards. He loved music and his favorite song was "Mexicali Rose". When I was young he used to take me to the Hatch shell on the weekends. We traveled by bus and train and get a ice cream on the way home. My sisters and I talk often about how lucky we were to have such a happy home because of a father who loved us. Thank you Pa, I still miss you and love you forever."
