Thomas Haskell was born to Andrew and Chloe Freeman Haskell on 28 August, 1793 in Wilmington Vermont along with all his other siblings. Thomas grew up in Wilmington, Vermont. When Thomas was 26 he met and married Huldah Orcutt. Huldah was about 19 years of age (circa 1801). They married on 13 March, 1820 at Wilmington Vermont. A United States Census shows Thomas and Huldah in New York in 1840. The 1830 and 1840 census note two children that are at this time unknown and unaccounted for. In the 1840 census a female child between the ages of 15-20 is listed and a male child between the ages of 10-15 is also listed. Whether these children stayed in New York, or died is still unknown. We know that Thomas and Huldah eventually moved to Iowa. They purchased property or homesteaded a land claim in Clayton County. On 11 February, 1860 he sold his son Monroe G Haskell 80 acres of land. County documents also prove that Thomas bought back 20 acres from Monroe in 1863. It is probable that Thomas and Huldah homesteaded in Iowa. The minimum acreage offered was 160 acres. So Thomas sold his son half of his homestead.
Enlisted as a Corporal on October 4, 1861 at the age of 25. Joined Co. F, 12th Iowa Infantry Regiment on October 26, 1861.
Promoted to Sergeant on March 22, 1862.
Promoted to 1st Sergeant on March 1, 1863.
Died on September 2, 1863 at Camp Sherman, Mississippi
