May 3, 2014Leona Jane Morris, 93, passed away peacefully at home with family members by her side on April 17, 2014.
Born May 23, 1920, in Milwaukie, Ore., to Floyd Abram and Lena Rudesill, she spent her childhood years in the Sellwood and Ardenwald neighborhoods of Southeast Portland before the family returned to Seaside in 1933.
The original Rudesill family home and cabins belonging to Leona's grandparents, Calvin and Dora Rudesill, are still standing along the Necanicum River at North. Holladay Drive and Third Avenue. Leona's mother, Dr. Lena Hodges, came to Seaside after graduating from the Los Angeles School of Osteopathy. She opened her family practice in 1909 and retired in 1962.
Leona was a 1938 graduate of Seaside Union High School. She completed nurse's training at St. Mary's School of Nursing, Astoria, Ore., in 1941. Leona Jane and Finnis Edwin Morris were married on Aug. 22, 1942, in the Seaside Methodist Church, the first couple to recite wedding vows in the newly built parlor. Following World War II, Leona and Finnis resided in the Clatsop County communities of Seaside, Gearhart and Svensen with their five children.
Moving to Hood River, Ore., in 1960, they operated a small farm and pear orchard. Retiring in 1978 to Bend, they enjoyed the scenic beauty of Central Oregon, taking many hunting and camping trips in the Wallowa Mountains and Snake River areas. Leona had resided at Fountain Court Senior Living in Maple Valley since 2009.
Leona was active in Ramona Rebekah Lodge No. 222 in Seaside, holding continuous membership since 1938, and she was a past president of FL Club No. 16. While raising her family, Leona was involved with her children as a Sunday School teacher, classroom volunteer, PTA member, and Cub Scout den mother for her three sons. She was a Boy Scout Troop No. 22 committee member and head cook during summer camp at the Boy Scouts' C-Bar-L Ranch. Leona was a lifelong, devoted member of the United Methodist Church.
Leona lovingly crocheted colorful afghans for five family generations. Everyone she knew received at least one pair of yarn slippers or set of decorated hangers. At Christmas, Leona baked more than 80 gift loaves of tea breads as her way of saying "thank you" and "I love you" to her family and friends. She was an expert gardener, and her cupboards were filled with the fruits and vegetables of her labors. She enjoyed TV sports, especially the Trailblazers and Mariners.
Leona is survived by her brother, John C. Rudesill, Bend, Ore.; four children, Margaret (Larry) Harto, Covington, Wash., Robert Morris, Lacey, Wash., Howard (Bonnie) Morris, Aberdeen, Wash., and Alice Hinkley, Sandy, Ore.; and daughter-in-law, Mary Morris, Hydaburg, Alaska. Lovingly called "Nanny" by three generations of family that include 87 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, she welcomed them all with warm hugs and a beautiful smile.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Finnis; sister, Betty Ann Rudesill; son, John E. Morris; grandson, Mathew Morris; great-grandchildren, Jordan Askew and Brittney Morris.
