In 1939, he was assigned to accompany the champion jumper of the Hawaiian Islands to Connecticut. George and the horse sailed a freighter to San Francisco, spent a week at the Presidio, and then boarded a railroad car with a special stall built for her. In his retirement, George pursued his many interests including writing poetry, attending poetry workshops, swimming laps, reading, studying many subjects, being involved in activities of Elderhostels, of the First UMC Escondido and the Palomar Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Vista.

Survivors include his four children with Esther, one stepson from his marriage to Anna Lou, six grandchildren, six step grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one son-in-law, and three daughters-in-law. Habitat for Humanity.
