EARL M. CARTER SR., 84, of John Dyer Road, a welder for the Mobile Oil Co., East Providence, for many years before retiring in 1972, died Thursday at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Margaret (Sullivan) Carter and the late Ann Carter.

Born in Little Compton, he was a son of the late Edith Carter Almy.

Mr. Carter was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church.

He leaves a brother, Ralph Carter of Little Compton; a half brother, Albert Almy of Tiverton; two sisters, Louise Wilber and Mabel Davol, both of Little Compton; a half sister, Janet Pennington of Little Compton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was father of the late Earl M. Carter Jr. and brother of the late Evelyn Andersen.

LOUISE S. WILBER, 83, of Colebrook Road, owner and manager of the Commons Lunch restaurant in Little Compton before retiring, died yesterday at the Mediplex Rehabilitaiton Hospital in New Bedford, Mass. She was the widow of Kenneth E. Wilber Sr.

A lifelong Little Compton resident, she was a daughter of the late Edith S. (Carter) Almy.

She leaves a son, Kenneth E. Wilber Jr. of Little Compton; two brothers, Ralph Carter of Little Compton and Albert Almy of Tiverton; two sisters, Mabel Davol of Little Compton and Janet Pennington of Tiverton; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

Pardon A. Almy, 72, a lifelong resident of Tiverton, died Monday at the Truesdale hospital, where he underwent an operation 10 days ago. He had been in failing health for some time. A bakery salesman, he was well known throughout the county towns.

He was born in Tiverton Four Corners, son of the late Pardon and Christine Almy. He leaves his wife, Mrs. EDith S. Carter Almy, three sons, Merton and Albert of Tiverton and Milton P. Almy, U.S.N.R., a daughter, Miss Janet Almy of Tiverton, a sister, Mrs. Eva T. Durfee of New Bedford, two grandchildren, and several nieces.

Albert A. "Pard" Almy, 83, of Tiverton, died Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Silver Creek Nursing Home in Bristol. He was the husband of Elsie (Barlow) Almy. Born in Fall River he was the son of the late Pardon and Edith S. (Carter) Almy and was a lifelong resident of Tiverton.

He was a member of the former Central Baptist Church of Tiverton. Mr. Almy was a truck driver for Old Colony Transportation of Fall River and New Bedford for over 30 years retiring in 1980. He had also worked for J. & J. Corrugated Box Co. of Fall River and Franklin, MA. He had served in the Merchant Marines and enjoyed fishing at Grinnell's Beach in Tiverton for many years.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son: Richard A. "Pard" Almy of Tiverton, a daughter: Janet M. Lavoie and her husband Mike of Tiverton, 3 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Ralph and Earl Carter, Janet Pennington, Mabel Davoll, Louise Wilber and Evelyn Anderson.

Little Compton - William S. Carter, 77, of John Dyer Road, Little Compton, died yesterday at Rhode Island Hospital after a long illness. A painter most of his life, he retired in 1972 after being a painter and caretaker for the David Brayton estate here for several years.

He was a member of the United Congregational Church of Little Compton, a member and past grand of Seaconnet Lodge of the International Order of Odd Fellows, and a member of the American Legion and the Little Compton Game Club. He served in the Navy during World War I. He was born in Little Compton, a son of William T. and Mary E. Hedley Carter and lived here all his life.

Mr. Carter leaves a son, William S. Carter Jr. of Foxboro, Mass.; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Wingate of Greenville and Mrs. Marjorie Simmons of Little Compton; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren

DOROTHY G. WINGATE, 79, of Sprague Street, Greenville, a retired office administrator, died yesterday at home.

She was the wife of the late Frank E. Wingate. Born in Little Compton, a daughter of the late William and Rose (Dailey) Carter, she had lived in North Providence and Fall River before moving to the Greenville section of Smithfield 45 years ago.

Mrs. Wingate was an office administrator at the Smithfield YMCA for 23 years, before retiring last year.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia A. Brunette of Woonsocket and Mary E. Gustafson of Lincoln; two sons, Frank E. Wingate of Greenville and Peter A. Wingate of Providence; a sister, Marjorie Simmons, and a brother, William Carter, both of Little Compton; and five grandchildren.

William S. "Sonny" Carter, 93, of Little Compton passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Esther E. (Crapo) Carter. Born in Fall River, son of the late William S. and Rose (Dailey) Carter, he had lived in Little Compton for most of his life.

Prior to retirement, he worked for Foxboro Country Club for 29 years and the Acoaxet Club for 27 years. Mr. Carter was a member of the First Baptist Old Stone Church in Tiverton.

Survivors include 2 daughters: Linda Hinkle and her husband Jeff of Harrington, DE and Susan Lodge and her husband Steve of Tucson, AZ; a sister: Marjorie Simmons of Little Compton; 5 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was brother of the late Dorothy Wingate.

Newport, Rhode Island ~ Esther E. (Crapo) Carter 74, of Little Compton Rhode Island died after a long illness on March 11, 2006 at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport. She was the wife of William S. "Sonny" Carter, Jr., they were married for 55 years.

Mrs. Carter was born in Westport, Massachusetts, daughter of the late Orin and Esther (Babcock) Crapo. She resided in Westport, later in Foxboro and finally in Little Compton. She was a member of the First Baptist Old Stone Church, Tiverton, Rhode Island and a former member of the Foxboro Baptist Church. She was employed by Becton Dickerson in Walpole and later by Telco Systems in Norwood as an inspector retiring in 1987. She enjoyed walking on the beach and golfing.

In addition to her widower, she is survived by two daughters: Linda Hinkle of Harrington, DE and Susan Lodge of Tuscon, AZ; two brothers: Robert Crapo of FL and Charles Crapo of Tiverton; 4 sisters: Mary Crapo of Newport, Evelyn Levesque of NM, and Edith Travers of Westport, and Virginia Pierce of Westport; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.

She was sister of the late Orin Crapo, Jr. and Janet Reed.

Isabelle (Arey) Hedly, 88, of West Main Road, Portsmouth, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Atwell C. Hedly. Born in Bucksport, Maine, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Dora (Miles) Arey. She lived in Rhode Island for 71 years.

A knitting instructor at Rogers High School in Newport before retiring, she had also worked as a waitress in the Officers' Club in Newport for 10 years, handling all of the admirals' functions. She was a member of the Newport Coin Club and the Portsmouth Evangelical Friends Church.

She leaves a son, Atwell B. Hedly of Barrington; a sister, Gertrude Stephenson of Apple Valley, Calif; two grandsons, Jeffrey Hedly of Somerset and William Raposa of Smithfield; three great-grandchildren; and members of her extended family living in Warren.

She was the mother of the late Judith L. Raposa, sister of the late Edith Atwood and grandmother of the late David Hedly.

She was born in Newport, Aug. 23, 1941 a daughter of Atwell and Isabelle Arey Hedly. She attended Portsmouthg schools and graduated from Rogers High School in 1960. Mrs. Raposa was a member of the Friend's Church in Portsmouth.
Besides her husband and parents, she leaves a son, William Atwell Raposa of Portsmouth and a brother, Benjamin Hedly.

PARONE, Helen H. Age 92, of Medford Lakes, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2009, at Virtua W. Jersey Hospital, Voorhees. Born in Fall River, MA, Helen resided in Medford Lakes for over 40 years.

She was a teacher at the Lenape Kiddie Kollege in Medford, and was a lifetime member of the Colony Club in Medford Lakes. Helen was Past President of the Medford Chapter Auxiliary of the Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills. She also was a member of and enjoyed singing with the Sweet Adelines.

Wife of the late Alfred Parone; she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and William Heddendorf; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Alfred Parone, Jr., Joseph and Jody Parone, and Timothy and Kristin Parone; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernadine J. (Hedley) Sage, 76, of Hartford Avenue, Granby, wife of the late C. Howard Sage, Jr., died Sunday, (May 26, 2002) at the Governor's House in Simsbury.

She was born July 17, 1925 in Hartford, daughter of the late Alfred and Mary (Kenny) Hedley and had lived in Hartford prior to moving to Granby 56 years ago.

Mrs. Sage was employed as a bookkeeper at the Bradley Airport Parking and the Hartford Courant many years prior to her retirement. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Simsbury and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles H. Sage, III and his wife, Linda of Ellington and Russel C. Sage of Wallingford; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Richard Schultz of Granby; six grandchildren, Amy, Steven, Adam, Michael, Christina and Brittany; and two great grandchildren, Avery Sage and Matthew Blaidell.

John M. Hedly, 81, of 598 Middle Road, Portsmouth, for 30 years a clerk at the Supply Depot of the Naval Base, died Monday in Newport Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Madeline Hedly.

Mr. Hedly was a member of the Kenneth Gilbert VFW Post of Middletown.

Born in Portsmouth Nov. 26, 1891, he was the son of Arthur and Mary Hathaway Hedly. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ann Wilding of Warwick and Mrs. Dorothy Sleagle of Santa Ana, Calif.; two sisters, Miss Hahala Hedly of Portsmouth and Mrs. Stella Ellis of Boston; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mrs Hedley was well known here, being the wife of John Hedley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hedley of West Main road. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Miss Dorothy Hedley, and a twin sister, who resides in Peabody.


John Wilson Slagle Sr.

John W. Slagle, Sr., 83, of La Pine, Ore., died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at his home.

He was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Mosgrove to Merrell and Margaret (McCanna) Slagle.

He was a retired captain of the Marine Corps, after serving for 25 years, from 1940 to 1965. He served in World War II and the Korean War.

He was the recipient of many service awards including the Navy Cross (the nations second-highest medal), The Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V, two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, five Presidential Unit Citations, Combat Action Ribbon, three Korean Presidential Citations, and a Special Commendation from the President of Korea.

After his retirement, he spent several years in California and then moved to Oregon in 1972, where he joined the local county Sheriffs Department, retiring from there in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, John W. Slagle Jr. and wife Marilyn, of Anaheim, Calif., and Robert M. Slagle and wife Esther of Laguna Hills, Calif.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Slagle of Broken Arrow, Okla.; three sisters, Betty Lindberg, of Clearwater, Fla., Marjorie Dunmire, of Manorville and Yula Bowser, of Manor Township; nephews; and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Dorothy (Hedley) Slagle, who died Oct. 14, 1996.

BARRINGTON '97William Murdoch Hedly, 80, of River Road, Barrington, died Saturday, March 17, 2007, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center after a period of failing health.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1926, in Boston, Mass., the son of William S. and A. Mildred (MacLeod) Hedly. He graduated from Somerville, Mass., High School in 1944 and received his BA in sciences from Northeastern University in 1961.

He served our country in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He worked at MIT Draper Laboratories in Cambridge, Mass., and Dynamics Research Corporation in Wilmington, Mass. He was a past master of King Solomon's Lodge in Somerville, Mass., and a member of the Medford Council of the Commandery; he was a high priest of the Royal Arch Chapter in Boston, Mass.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean H. (Atkinson) Hedly; his three children, BonnieJean Tuttle of Barrington, John W. and Linda Hedly of Auburn, Mass., and Stephen D. Hedly of Barrington; five grandchildren, Christopher and Ann Marie Tuttle of Epping, James, Jennifer and Jason Hedly of Auburn, Mass., and Melissa Hedly of Barrington; five great-grandchildren, Christopher, Olivya and Alexander Tuttle of Epping, Dylan Hedly of Chicopee, Mass., and Mackenzie Hedly of Azle, Texas.

William C. Perry Sr., 72, of Victory Highway, finished his earthly duties on Dec. 23, 2010, with his family by his side.

He was the husband of Joan L. (Boudreau) Perry. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late William C. and Mary Elizabeth (Hedley) Perry. Besides his beloved wife, he is survived by his son, William C. Perry Jr. of Providence; his daughter, Deborah Perry of North Smithfield; and his grandchildren, Katherine Fillengere of West Warwick, and William Charles Perry Miller and Alex Perry Miller of Steelton, Pa.

A Marine Corps veteran, Mr. Perry attended the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence. In 1973, he established his own independent art studio in Slatersville and was responsible for creating the murals on the side of Woonsocket City Hall and in the rear of the Woonsocket Call building. Mr. Perry continued to create images and artworks large and small from his studio in Slatersville.

A funeral service was held this afternoon in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth for Thomas William Hedly, 53, of 119 Gormley Ave., Portsmouth, a retired electrician. He died last Friday.
The Rev. David P. Jenkins, rector, officiated. Burial was in the churchyard. Bearers were Warren Marshall and George Montgomery of Eureka Lodge of Masons, Paul Boardman Sr., Paul Boardman Jr.;, August Morris and Arthur Ellis. Eureka Lodge held its ritual last night at the Hambly Funeral Home.
Mr. Hedly was born in Portsmouth. He retired from the Navy Public Works Department in 1960.
He leaves his wife, Alice Allinson Hedly; two sons, Thomas W. Hedly of Portsmouth and Robert G. Hedly of Newport; his mother, Mrs. Mahala Hedly of Portsmouth, and two grandchildren.
