July 14, 1956Mrs. Ella L. Davis, 84, of 312 1/2 Blackstone Ave., Providence, formerly of Portsmouth, died at Rhode Island Huspital in Providence yesterday morning after a long illness. In recent years she has been living with a daughter, Mrs. Blanche Bellevance, on Blackstone Avenue.
Mrs. Davis was born in Somerset, Mass., a daughter of Frank and Hannah Cory Moore. Besides her daughter she leaves two brothers, ?Joseph Brazell and Frank Brazell, both of Portsmouth, and a sister, Mary Thomas of Newport.

June 23, 1962Mrs. Blanche Bellavance, 66, wife of Frank Bellavance of 312 1/2 Blackstone St. Providence, diedsuddenly in that city yesterday. She was born in Portsmouth.
Surviving is a son by a previous marriage, Frank Davis of Little Compton, and two stepsons, Carl and Thomas Bellavance of Attleboro, Mass., and three grandchildren.

February 27, 1956Charles E. Thomas, 68, of 21 Third St., retired grocery store manager, died in a Providence hospital after a long illness. He was born in Portsmouth, the eldest son of George Bradford Thomas and Nettie Macomber Thomas. Mr. Thomas was for a number of years the postmaster in Portsmouth.
In 1922, he moved to Middletown. He and his father operated a grocery store on West Main Road. After his father's death, Mr. Thomas came to Newport and was manager of A&P and First National Stores here.
He was a member of Eureka Lodge of Masons in Portsmouth for 45 years, secretary of the Aquidneck Chapter for 23 years, and was a charter member of Eureka Eastern Star.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Brazil Thomas of Newport,; a son, Clifton E. Thomas of Millis, Mass.; a daughter, Mrs. Ava C. Miller of Springfield, Mass.; a brother, Frank J. Thomas of Largo, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Edna M. Thomas of Middletown and two great granddaughters.

August 12, 1998GLADYS C. MESSIER, 89, of Highland Avenue, Fall River, died Monday in Adams House. She was the wife of Francis D. Messier, to whom she had been married for 66 years.
Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late William and Mary E. Berryman, she had lived in the Home for Aged for 22 years.
Mrs. Messier was payroll clerk for American Thread for 25 years. She was a member of the former Bogle Street Church and the First Congregational Church in Fall River. She was an avid dancer, and raised and bred parakeets.
Besides her husband, she leaves her sister-in-law, Tillie Sawyer of Fall River.

February 4, 1999FRANCIS D. "FRANK" MESSIER, 91, of 1168 Highland Rd., died Monday at Adams House. He was the husband of the late Gladys (Berryman) Messier.
He was born in Fall River, a son of the late Louis and Catherine (McCowan) Messier. He lived in North Westport for 40 years before returning to Fall River in 1996.
He was a supervisor at the American Thread Co. for 24 years and also worked for 16 years as a medical technician at Oak Grove Surgical Supply, retiring in 1969.
He attended Bradford Durfee Textile School. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and was a past Grand Master of I.O.O.F - Puritan Lodge.
He leaves a sister, Matilda "Tillie" Sawyer, of Fall River.

October 24, 1996RUSSELL J. BERRYMAN, 59, of Ames Baker Way, a tractor-trailer river for Mayflower Moving Co., retiring in 1974 due to illness, died Wednesday at home.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late William and Edna (Dupre) Berryman, he had lived in South Dartmouth for the last 19 years.
He was a communicant of St. George Chruch.
He leaves two sons, Russell W. Berryman and Michael Berryman, both in Rhode Island; two sisters, Jacqueline Arsenault of Tiverton and Linda Gonsavles of South Dartmouth and several nieces and nephews.

December 18, 1993CLIFTON E. BERRYMAN SR., 78, of 307 Cross Road Dr., formerly of Barlow Street, Fall River, Mass., a thread dryer at the former American Thread Co. until retiring in 1965, died Thursday at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Gertrude M. (Dube) Berryman.
Born in Fall River, son of the late William and Elizabeth (Barnshaw) Berryman, he had been a Fall River resident for 30 years before moving to North Dartmouth in 1982. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Fall River.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Judith A. Morrow of Swansea, Mass.; a son, Clifton E. Berryman Jr. of Fall River; and a sister, Gladys Messier of Westport, Mass.

November 13, 2011Gertrude M. (Dube) Berryman, age 92 of Swansea formerly of Barlow St., Fall River, died Thursday, November 10, 2011 in Country Gardens Skilled Nursing Center in Swansea. She was the wife of the late Clifton E. Berryman.
Born in Fall River the daughter of the late Joseph and Emma (Fish) Dube she spent over 30 years in Fall River, lived in Westport and Dartmouth before moving to Swansea 12 years ago. Mrs. Berryman was employed as a Sewing Machine Operator for over 10 years for the former Stella Anne Frocks in Fall River. She was a member of the Westport Senior Citizens Club and was very talented with crafts and making clothing.
She is survived by her daughter Judith A. Morrow and her husband Carl of Swansea and several nieces. She was also the mother of the late Clifton E. Berryman Jr.

July 19, 1974The Rev. Charles W. Cory, 79, a native of Portsmouth, died July 8 in Janesville, Wisc. He had suffered a heart attack after returning home from visits to Ohio and Indiana in late June.
He served Methodist pastorates in New England for 25 years and then in Ohio for 20 years. He retired in 1966 and since 1970, Mr. and Mrs. Cory had lived at the Methodist Rest Home in Janesville.
Mr. Cory was born December 7, 1894, son of Charles W. and Phoebe Grinnell Cory. He was graduated from Gordon College of Theology in Boston in 1924.Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Olive Taylor Cory, whom he married in Maine in 1923; a daughter, Mrs. Lowell Messerschmidt of Madison, Wisc., a son Paul R. Cory of South Charlston, W. Va., and 10 grandchildren.

June 30, 1998Lowell J. Messerschmidt, 80, an ordained minister who served as Madison's director of public welfare for six tumultuous years, died Sunday at his home in Stoughton. Messerschmidt, a United Methodist pastor, served as head of the city's welfare department from 1969 to 1975, a period of struggle over welfare rights and an increasing caseload. Madison Mayor Paul Soglin fired him in 1975, but Messerschmidt later received a $10,000 settlement in the dismissal. Messerschmidt authored two books, ''Bauer-Sensei,'' and ''The Platform of Jesus,'' and contributed articles to the Wisconsin State Journal.

June 30, 1939Mrs. Annie Tucker, a native of Portsmouth and wifeof the late Walter Tucker, died at her home on Bristol Ferry road Tuesday morning after a long illness.
She was a daughter of the late John and Mary Freeborn and was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church and the Ladis Benevolence of that church. Surviving are a son, Minot Tucker; a brother, Ralph Freeborn; and two grandchildren, all of Portsmouth.
