April 20, 1928Mr. James B. Lawton, a well known resident of Newport, died at the Newport Hospital Tuesday, after a long illness. A year ago he was compelled to give up active work and was seriously ill for some time. Recovering somewhat, he was able to be about for a while, but a few days ago he became worse and was taken to the hospital.
The deceased was a member of the Lawton family, which has been prominant in the Point section of the city, his grandfather having been Isaac Lawton, and his grandmother Mary ann Freeborn and his father Thomas R. Lawton. He was an exoert meat cutter and at one time conducted a butcher shop, later working in various markets about the city, in recent years he had worked for Dalton E. Young and his successors in nthe Beyer building on Thomas street. For many years he was a member of the choir of St. John's Church.
His wife, who was Miss Georgianna Hull, of this city died several years ago, and a son, a daughter and a brother Stephen B. Lawton have also died, so that was the last of his immediate family. His uncles are Mssers Edward N. Lawton and Francis M. Lawton and among his cousins are Chief Engineer Joseph S. Lawton, Representative Fletcher W. Lawton and Mr. Benjamin Lawton.

March 8, 1929Mr. William Henry Sherman, for many years employed in the machinist department of the New England Steamship Company's repair shops died late Saturday afternoon, at his home ob Second street. He had been ill since Tuesday with an infected ankle to which he gave but little attention, because of a kidney trouble from which he had been suffering. Mr. Sherman was born in Middletown a son of Anastasia Ward Sherman and the late Charles C. Sherman, his home in that town being on Paradise avenue. He had been at the repair shops the last 11 years.
He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Abbie Grace Sherman, two sons, Messrs. William H. and Geoirge W. M. Sherman, a daughter Mrs. Nutt N. Johanson; a mother who is 85 years old, three brothers, Messrs. Charles C., Richard and Andrew Sherman of this city, and three sisters, Mrs. Richard Hesse of North Weymouth, Mass., Mrs. A. J. Fatcoher of Wollaston, Mass., and Mrs. Harry Hazard of Middletown. There are are also several grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces.

August 12, 1954George William Fisher Sherman, 44, formerly of Newport, died unexpectedly last night at his home in Bennington, Wash., according to a telegram recieved this morning by his sister, Mrs. Catherine A. Johansson of 18 Wesley St.
He was born in Newport, a son of the late William H. and Abbie Fisher Sherman and attended Rogers High School. An electrical engineer, he had been employed at the Naval Torpedo Station. About 20 years ago he moved to the Bennington Torpedo Station.
He leaves his sister in Newport; his wife, the former Louise May of Providence, two daughters, Louise and Shirley Anne Sherman, all of Bennington; a brother William Sherman of New York and several nieces and nephews.

December 22, 2003Louise May Sherman of Poulsbo died Dec. 21, 2003 in Poulsbo. She was 94. Sherman was born to Frank and Sarah L. (Thurber) May in Woonsockett, R.I. on March 28, 1909. She married George W.F. Sherman on June 2, 1934 in Newport, R.I.
Sherman graduated from nursing school in Newport, R.I. She worked as a homemaker until 1950 and then as a Registered Nurse for the Kitsap County Health Department for 22 years until her retirement in 1972. Sherman was a part of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Gi Chapter and was also involved with family, friends and her community. She traveled extensively, including trips to Europe. She was a member of St. Paul?s Episcopal Church.
Sherman is survived by her daughters Nancy (Ed) Stebor of Bremerton and Shirley Sherman of Poulsbo, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband George W.F. Sherman and parents Frank and Sarah L. (Thurber) May.

December 27, 1946Mrs. Mary Sherman Cottrell Falconer of Wollaston, Mass., died Tuesday afternoon at he home after a long illness. She was a daughter of the late Charles Sherman and Annie Sherman Wood of this city.
She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Harry Hazard of Green End avenue, Middletown, and Mrs. Richard Hesse of Wollaston; three brothers, Richard, Charles and Andrew Sherman of this city; and a number of nieces and nephews.

June 18, 1956Mrs. Anastasia C. Hazard, 82, of 1215 Green End ave., Middletown, widow of Alfred Hazard, died yesterday at her home. She had been ill only a few days. She was born in Middletown, daughter of Charles and Anastasia Thompson (sic) Sherman. Mrs. Hazard was a member of St. Columba's Berkeley Memorial church.
She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Orrel Sullivan of Middletown and Mrs. Howard Devlin of Newport; a brother, Richard Sherman of Newport; a sister, Mrs. Richard Hesse of Wollaston, Mass.; three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

October 16, 1950Alfred H. Hazard of Green End avenue, Middletown, a farmer who observed his eighty sixth birthday anniversary December 1, died at his home Friday night after an illness of several years. Son of the late Alfred H. and Emma Hall Hazard, he had operated the family farm after his father's death many years ago.
He was much interested in music and while a young man played with the Berkeley Band, a group formed by his father, who also built Music Hall, site of musicales and dances and Berkeley parish activities. He later converted it into the family home.

September 24, 1971Mrs. Orrel F. Sullivan, 72, widow of Timothy J. Sullivan of 1195 Green End Avenue, Middletown, died unexpectantly in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. on Aug. 27. The funeral was held there.
Mrs. Sullivan moved to Florida after her husband died last December. In Florida she lived with her son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Larson.
Mrs. Sullivan was born in Middletown, Oct. 12, 1898, a daughter of Alfred and Anastasia Hazard. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Larson and Mrs. Robert O'Connel of Middletown; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Owing to the illness of the brides's sister, and her grandfather, Mr. Alfred Hazard, only the groom's parents and an intimate friend, Miss Nellie Peabody were present.

January 2, 1971Thomas J. Sullivan, 68, of 1195 Green End Ave., Middletown, a retired electrician, died unexpectantly Thursday at his home.
Before retiring in 1965, he worked at the Naqval Torpedo Station and later at the Quonset Point Naval Air Station.
Mr. Sullivan was in Newport on May 3, 1902, a son of Timothy J. and Elizabeth Sullivan Sullivan. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. William Larson at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

October 16, 1970Howard James Devlin, 64, of 36 Pond Ave., an aircraft electrician at Quonset Point Naval Air Station prior to his retirement in 1967, died yesterday at Newport Hospital after a long illness. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of Newport Lodge of Elks.
Mr. Devlin was born in Newport Dec. 23, 1905, son of William and Charlotte Sisson Devlin. He leaves a son, H. James Devlin Jr. of Newport; three sisters, Mrs. Michael Hussey and Mrs. Charlotte Sullivan of Newport and Mrs. William Strilzinger of Middletown; three brothers, Raymond D. Devlin of Middletown, Frank Devlin of Newport and Alfred Devlin of Carlisle, Pa. His wife was the late Mrs. Beatrice Hazard Devlin.

October 8, 1948Charles C. Sherman, at one time president of the Painters Union died Saturday at the Newport Hospital after a short illness. He lived at 9 Carroll avenue. Born in Middletown, he was a son of the late Charles and Anastasia (Townsend) Sherman and was in his sixty-eighth year. He leaves two daughters. Mrs. Benjamin Landers and Mrs. Ernest Larson, a brother, Richard Sherman, all of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Harry Hazard of Middletown and Mrs. Richard Hesse of Milton, Mass.

December 25, 1991Anastasia Veronica Larsen, 80, of 8 Atlantic St., died yesterday at home. She was the husband of Ernest Perry Larsen.
Born in Fall River, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Craig) Sherman.
Mrs. Larsen was a life member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Madonna, and was a communicant of St. Augustin Church. She had also been a Girl Scout troop leader.
Besides her husband, she leaves one son, Ernest Larsen of Middletown; one daughter, Elizabeth Pinto of Middletown; one sister, Mary Landers of Newport; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

November 18, 1995ERNEST P. LARSEN, 84, of Heathwood, Bellevue Avenue, formerly of Atlantic Street, died Thursday at Newport Hospital. He was a master plumber at the former Torpedo Station, and a former partner in Larsen and Carr Plumbing Co. in Jamestown. He was the husband of the late Anastasia Veronica (Sherman) Larsen.
A lifelong Newport resident, he was a son of the late Neils and Antine (Sorenson) Larsen.
Mr. Larsen had also worked for the former Tilley Plumbing Co. of Newport. He was a member of the Weenit Shassit Tribe of Redman and was a member of the Master Plumbers Association.
He leaves a son, Ernest C. Larsen, and a daughter, Elizabeth M. Pinto, both of Middletown.

July 2, 1998MARY ELIZABETH LANDERS, 85, of 18 Wesley St., a retired accountant, died Tuesday at home. She was the wife of Benjamin E. Landers.
Born in Newport, she was a daughter of the late Charles C. and Elizabeth (Craigh) Sherman.
She previously was a bookkeeper for J.T. O'Connell and a medical secretary for Dr. Charles Serbst. Mrs. Landers last worked as an accountant at the Aquidneck Medical Center.
She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Joseph Senior Citizens. In her early years, she had been a Brownie and Cub Scout leader and a council leader for Junior Catholic Daughters.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, C. Michael Landers of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Benjamin Landers Jr. of Newport; two daughters, Jane Ann Brennan of Warrenton, Va., and Mary C. Clark of Middletown; and nine grandchildren.

April 23, 2001BENJAMIN EASTON LANDERS, 88, of 18 Wesley St., a retired landscaper, died Saturday at the Village House Nursing Home.
He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Sherman) Landers. Born in Newport, he was the son of the late Charles and Jane (Easton) Landers.
Mr. Landers was a landscaper at the Island Cemetery for 20 years, retiring in 1975, and had previously worked at Harlow's Aquidneck Creamery. During World War II he worked at the former Naval Torpedo Station on Goat Island.
He was a past president of the Rogers High School Alumni Booster Club, and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the St. Joseph Senior Citizens.
An avid sportsman, he had played football and baseball at Rogers High School, and on the Old Aquidneck Football Team, and had coached in the Newport Little League and Babe Ruth League.
He leaves two sons, Charles M. Landers of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Benjamin J. Landers of Newport; two daughters, Jane A. Brennan of Warrenton, Va., and Mary C. Clark of Middletown; and nine grandchildren. He was the brother of the late George V. Landers and Myra Kenney.

December 24, 1995MILDRED E. WATERS, 88, of Edgewood Drive, died Friday at home. She was the wife of the late Thomas Waters.
Born in Newport, a daughter of the late Richard and Florence (Goff) Sherman, she lived in North Kingstown since 1965.
Mrs. Waters leaves a son, Thomas Waters Jr. of North Kingstown; three daughters, Elizabeth F. Corr of Middletown, Eugenie R. Dalicandro of North Kingstown, and Eileen M. Sequeira of Wakefield; a sister, Frances Hyder of Hopedale, Mass.; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Orville O. Dowler.

October 29, 1927Orville D. Dowler, a chauffeur for the Standard Wholesale Co., was drowned while gunning at Easton's Pond last Sunday morning, and a companion, Fred E. Sergerson, was rescued from a perilous position and hurried to the Hospital for emergency treatment.
The two men were in a canoe in pursuit of birds, when their craft was overturned and they were thrown into the water. Weighted down by their heavy clothing, they found swimming impossible, but clung to the bulrushes for a time. Dowler finally decided to try for the embankment, but was unable to make the distance and sank to his death. Sergerson clung until a recue party arrived in a surf boat that was procured at the Beach and hurried across the the dam. The body of Dowler was recovered by a detail of firemen who had been summoned on a still alarm. Police and others assisted in the rescue.
Dowler retired from the Navy a few months ago, and had since made his home on Van Zandt avenue. He is survived by a wife and two young children.

February 13, 1948Andrew V. "Spin" Sherman, 63, of 80 Warner street died Sunday at Rhode Island Hospiutal in Providence after a long illness. A native of Middletown, he was the son of the late Charles and Anastasia Townsend Sherman. Educated in the local schools, he became an electrician and at one time had his own contracting business.
Mr. Sherman, who was an athlete in his younger years played halfback on the Rangers football squad that captured a string of victories from 1906 through 1908.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Alice R. Gauthier Sherman, he leaves a son, Edward Francis Sherman, two brothers, Richard and Charles Sherman of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Adeline Hesse of Wollaston, Mass., and Mrs, Harry Hazard of Middletown.
Burial was in the Island cemetery.

November 25, 1977Mrs. Alice Sherman, 73, of 24D Coddington Manor died yesterday in Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Andrew Sherman.
Before retiring last year, she was manager of Lalli's News on Broadway. She was prewviously manager of the former Paramount Theater on Broadway and also worked at the Strand and Colonial Theaters.
Born in Worcester, Mass., Jan. 23, 1904, she was a Newport resident most of her life.
She is survived by a son Edward F. Sherman of Chicago, and four grandchildren.

June 9, 1939Alfred J. Mott, son of the late John C. and Ruth Corey Mott died at his home on West Main Road, Portsmouth, Tuesday morning.
He was born in Portsmouth May 2, 1876 and recieved his education in the schools of the town and at Moses Brown school in Providence. He was a member for many years and a past president of St. Paul's Mens Club of Portsmouth.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie Fish Mott of Portsmouth; a daughter, Mrs. Benjamin M. Thurston, and a grandson Benjamin Mott Thurston of this city.

July 6, 1973Monday July 2 - Mrs. Annie E. Fish Mott, 95, of 533 West Main Road, Portsmouth, died yesterday at Newport Hospital. She was the widow of Alfred J. Mott. She was born in Portsmouth, daughter of Lawrence and Frances Faulkner Fish.
She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, the church's Womems Guild, and the Portsmoth Historical Society.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Benjamin Thurston of Portsmouth; a grandson and three great grandchildren.

September 14, 1934Stanley Lawrence Mott, a native of Portsmouth, son of Alfred and Annie Mott, died Saturday at the Rhode Island Hospital, Providence of gas poisoning. He was 38 years old and served in the American Expeditionary Force in France during the World War. Since the war he had been in the automobile business in Providence.
He leaves a widow, Mrs. Mary Louise (Field) Mott, living in Providence, his parents of Portsmouth, a sister, Mrs. Benjamin M. Thurston of Newport, and two uncles, William Mott and Arthur Fish and an aunt, Miss Isabella Fish of Portsmouth.
Interment at the Portsmouth cemetery in the family lot.
