55298. Maralyne Haskell

Daily Herald (Provo, UT)
June 10, 2012

After a life of love and service, Maralyne Haskell Howe passed away in Logan, Utah on June 5, 2012. She was born June 23, 1928 in Lovell, Wyoming to Thales Edward Haskell and Edith Olson Haskell. She attended elementary school in Salt Lake City and high school in Lovell, Wyoming. At Lovell High Maralyne was a cheerleader and editor of the school newspaper and yearbook. She attended Brigham Young University and before her senior year was elected to be vice president of women students, but chose instead to marry. She married Elliot Castleton Howe in the Salt Lake Temple on August 25, 1948. Elliot and Maralyne are the parents of nine children.

Most of Maralyne's life was spent in service - to her children, her husband, and her church. The family lived in Pleasant Grove (Manila), Utah from 1956-1967, when Maralyne and Elliot were called to preside over the Texas Mission in Dallas, Texas. In addition to caring for seven children and a staff of office missionaries during their three-year calling (1967-70), Maralyne presided over the district Relief Society and joined her husband in speaking throughout the mission. She prepared meals for district and mission conferences, and hosted weekly group meetings where missionaries could bring investigators. After the family's return to Utah, she worked for the BYU ticket office, a job she enjoyed enormously because she was devoted to BYU. In 1989-90, she joined her husband for a year of teaching English at Nanjing Forestry University, leaving for China just a few weeks after the Tienanmen Square uprising.

Maralyne's greatest gift was her ability to love everyone, befriending those who were lonely or a bit different. She considered her children her "priceless eternal blessings," and her greatest sorrow was the death of three of her children during her lifetime. She loved any and every family activity, especially reunions. She is survived by her children Susan (Cless) Young, Michelle (Mel) Pyne, Jack (Kristin) Howe, Joseph (Kjirsten) Howe, Dale (Crystal) Howe, and Alan (Koleen) Howe, and 33 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, as well as her brother Thales (Marilyn) Haskell and her sister Evelyn (Kirk) Jameson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elliot C. Howe, daughter Carolyn, daughter Nancy (Greg) Bean, and son Ralph.
