dmitted to the Bar in 1892 and to the U.S. Circuit Court in 1893. He was a practicing lawyer and was President of the Cary Library which was founded by his uncle George Cary.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Brenda of Long Lake, Minn.

June 21, 1961Mrs. Raymond B. Bowen, the former Miss Virginia VanSantvoord and member of one of Bennington's prominent families, died suddenly Wednesday night at Putnam Memorial hospital. She would have observed her 72nd birthday today.
The daughter of the late Seymour and Caroline Shields VanSantvoord, she was born in Bennington June 29, 1889. Both her parents were long time residents here and members of socially prominent families. Her father will be remembered as a leading attorney in Troy, N.Y., for many years until his reirement in 1936 and the family always spent their summers at their summer home, Shadowbrook Farm.
Mrs. Bowen attended Emma Willard School in Troy and also Rosemary Hall in Greenwich Conn.
She was married to Raymond Brower Bowen on Sept. 25, 1915 at Shadowbrook Farm in Bennington, now the residence of her brother, George Van Santvoord.
Following her marriage, the Bowens moved to New Rochelle, N.Y., where they resided for some 30 years until Mr. Bowen's retirement in 1953 when the family went to New Rochelle, he had been associated with Outlook magazine, but later became advertising director of the New Yorker magazine. Mr. Bowen is now executive vice president of the Bennington County Industrial Corp.
Throughout her life, she had been affiliated with Bennington. She came here summers as a child as well as after her marriage. Coming back here permantly, the Bowens lived at Furnace Grove on Woodford Road, the old Shields place. Her children had acquired the same fondness for Bennington and returned here frequently.She was a member of North Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Rochelle and had been keenly interested in her church work and community activities there as well when she was in Bennington. Her contribution to many worthwhile causes are noteworthy. She had a congenial personality and had endeared herself to everyone she met. After returning to Bennington ehe became a member of the Second Congegational Church.
Survivors besides her husband are two sons, Van Santvoord Bowen of New York City and Jogn G. Bowen of Lakeville, Conn., one daughter, Mrs Harry (Barbara) M. Scoble of Madoson, Wisc., gour grandsons; three brothers, George and Richard Van Santvoord of Bennington, and Alexander Van Santvoord Glrenn Grove, N.J.; two sisters, Mrs. Donald (Edith) Campbell, Bennington and Mrs. William (Agnes) T. Rice, Pittsfield, Mass., nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives are left.

July 9, 1984NEW YORK (DPS, July 12) -- Van Santvoord Bowen, vice president of the Episcopal Church Foundation, died June 21 of a heart attack while returning from a trip to London. He was 63.
Bowen, an active Episcopalian, had been program officer in charge of the graduate fellowship program and the revolving loan fund at the Episcopal Church Foundation since September of 1966. Speaking for the board of directors, David E. Giles, president, said: "Van Bowen's untimely death is a great loss to the Foundation. His loyalty and conscientious attention to a number of important duties during his 18 years of service were outstanding. We will sorely miss him and extend our deepest sympathy to his family."
Bowen was a member of the Church of the Epiphany in New York City and had served on the vestry there. He was also a member of the ministries commission of the Diocese of New York and had held a number of other posts at the diocesan level.
Prior to coming to work at the Foundation, Bowen had worked for the Children's Aid Society, Community Service Society, Empire State Foundation of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges and CARE, Inc. He had served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. during the Second World War and was a graduate, Phi Beta Kappa, of Princeton University.
In addition to his work with Foundation grants, Bowen was known as the author of the book, A Vestry Member's Guide.
He is survived by his sister, Barbara B. Hoff, of California; and a brother, John G. Bowen, of Lakeville, Conn.

After serving in World War II, he graduated from Syracuse University in 1947 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He retired from RCA in New Jersey and moved to Charlotte in 1987.
