Unknown newspaperFireman Burdette V. Pebbles, who was killed in the railroad wreck at Bath early Tuesday morning, was a native of this town and son of Engineer George Prbbles. He attended the public schools of this place and lived here until his removal to Woodsville. July 10, 1897Railroad Wreck at Bath
A freight train on the White Mountains division of the Boston & Maine railroad was wrecked by a washout early Tuesday morning at a point about four miles north of Woodsville, and three men were killed and the engine and eleven cars were badly wrecked. The killed are Patrick Lennon, engineer, Whitefield; Burdette Pebbles; fireman, Plymouth; O E Lang, brakeman, Berlin.
The wreck occurred about 3:20 o'clock Tuesday morning. The train which was known as No 1, was bound northward and left Woodsville at 3 o'clock. It was made up of 14 cars, most of which were heavily loaded. At Poor's Brook, one mile south of Bath, where the track is low, the locomotive suddenly left the rails and sank into a large lagoon formed of mud and water beneath the track. The first half dozen cars were also derailed and the contents scattered about the scene along the road and in the water.
The engineer of the train, Patrick Lennon of Whitefield, the fireman, Burdett V Pebbles of Plymouth, and the brakeman, O E Lang, of Berlin, went down with the wreck and lost their lives. Lang, it is supposed, was on the engine, or else on one of the forward cars. Lennon was rescued in an unconscious condition by Conductor H E Gale from the waters of the surging brook. He died soon afterwards. The bodies of Pebbles and Lang have not been recovered and it is doubtful is they are ever found. It is thought the engine plunged through the undermined tracks without warning as no attempt to slacken the speed of the train was noted. As the locomotive found lodgment in the water and mud, the heavy cars rushed on behind and crushed it into a broken and twisted mass of debris. The other cars which were derailed were not badly damaged.
Wrecking crews were at once dispatched to clear away the wreckage and repair that part of the track washed out ahead of the wreck. Trains were not run regularly until early Tuesday morning.
An investigation of the wreck shows that a section of the track and roadbed for a distance of 150 feet was washed away by the overflow of Poor's Brook during the night. The rails, it is thought were in position for quite a distance in front of the locomotive when it reached the treacherous spot. The washout was caused by a cloudburst, which passed over this section. A great volume of water fell in a short time and the small streams overflowed the lowlands. >The Plymouth Record, July 10, 1897, v12, no28, p4.
