November 18, 1966Services for Maurice E. Hascall, 85, retired merchant farmer of LaGrande, who died Wednsday at St. Joseph Hospital, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Crippin and Daniels Chapel. Rev. Gordon Mu\illdrum will officiate, and burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery.
Born in Proctor, Vermont, Mr. Hascall had resided in LaGrande for 33 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. and Mrs. Hascall were married in Pilot Rock on Dec. 20, 1911. They were farmers and merchants in this area for approximately 33 years. Mrs. Hascall preceded her husband in death by one week. Her funeral service was held Nov. 15.

November 24, 1966Memorial services were held in La Grande Saturday for Gene Hascall, 85. Mr. Hascal was well known in Pilot Rock having lived here for many years.
Maurice Eugene Hascall was born Jan. 31, 1981 the son of Charles Daniel Hascall and Elinora Clarl Warner at Proctor, Vermont. He came to Oregon by train when he was 5 years old. He attended the old Byrd School on West Birch and recieved his certificate to teach from the old Pendleton Academy. He never taught but being of a mechanical nature he went to work at Rock Creek near Haines on the power house of the Eastern Elictric Co.
He was married to Frances Luverna Hale on Dec. 20, 1911 in Pilot Rock.When his older brother, James purchased land and started a saw mill here on West River Creek, he worked for him. Both owned land and ran cattle on Birch Creek. Frank Cable lives on one of the places now,
They moved to Le Grande in 1933. Both he and his wife were charter members of the Blue Mountain Gem Society, members of the Christian Church and the Gideon auxiliary. His wife preceded him in death by just a few days.

November 17, 1966Word was recieved here the past week of the death of Mrs. Gene Hascall, the former Frances Luvena Hale. She passed away very suddenly at her home in La Grande, Nov. 9. Memorial services were held at La Grande Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the Crippin and Daniels Funeral Chapel.
She was born Jan. 21, 1885, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gorbett of Decatur, Tex. and later adopted by Mr. and Mrs. William Barry Hale, eho are also deceased. She was married Dec. 20, 1911 in Pilot Rock to Maurice Eugene Hascall, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Daniel Gascall. An adopted daughter preceded her in death.
Relatives attending from Pilot Rock included Mr. and Mrs. Percy Hascall, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Hascall and daughter Irene, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cable, Wayne Hascall. Relatives from Pendleton were Mrs. Daphne Merkling and Mr, and Mrs. Lloyd Thomas. Mr. Hascall who has been seriously ill, died yesterday.

May 27, 1976Caldwell - Services for Audie O. Swinney, 69, 410 Grant, Caldwell, who died Tuesday in a Boise hospital, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell, by Rev. Ken Simmons, First United Methodist Church. Intermant will be in Canyon Hill cemetery.
He was born April 17, 1907, in Bridgeport, Tex., and was raised and educated in Texas, Oklahoma and Oregon. He worked on several Oregon farms and moved to Caldwell in the 1930's, where he worked as a meat cutter for the Johnson Brothers Meat Co. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, served with the 774th Bombardment Squad and was discharched in 1945. He married Violet May Healy Oct. 14, 1960 in Winnemucca. He was employed by the Pacific Fruit Express Shop, Nampa, until his retirement in 1969.
Surviving are his wife, Caldwell; two brothers, Marvin, Olympia, Wash., and Leonard, LeGrande, Ore.; and two sisters, Sally Crowder, Alpine, Tex., and Vera Weesgerber, Billings, Mont. He was preceeded in death by a brother.

December 14, 1925Durham - Dec. 14 (Special) - Mrs. Rose M. Sewall, wife of George L. Sewall, of this town, died very suddenly, early Monday. Mrs. Sewall had not been in her usual health for the last four days and on Sunday sent for the family physician, but she had been about the house as usual. She awaoke on Monday morning and spoke to her husband and then passed away almost immediately.
Mrs. Sewall was born in West Durham the daughter of James A. and Meline Hascall, and she was a life long resident of this town. She was one of the oldest members of Eureka grange and one of the foremost workers in the organization.
Besides her husband she leaves a son, James Sewall of Woburn, Mass., two daughters, Mrs. Dwight Marble of Auburn, and Mrs. Julian Sylvester of Durham, two brothers, Charles Hascall of Auburn and Chellis Hascall of Durham and five grandchildren.

July 9, 1982Ilda Marble, 81, of 6 Josslyn St., Auburn, widow of Dwight Marble, died Thursday evening at her home, following a lingering illness. Born Aug. 28, 1900, at Durham, she was the daughter of George and Rose Hascall Sewall. Her husband died in 1961.
Mrs. Marble was a member of the United Baptist Church of Lewiston, The Alden M. Gayton Post Auxiliary, and the Gold Star Mothers, and she was director of the Oak Hill Cemetery Association, and Secretary of the Durham Cemetery Association.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Betty) Burke of Auburn and Mrs. Francis (Priscilla) James of Freeport; a sister, Altie Sylvester of Westfield, Mass.; three grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
A son Richard, died in 1944 while serving in the military in World War II.

November 18, 1947Charles H. Hascall, 72, of Young's Corner, Auburn, was stricken by an attack of acite heart disease while seated in his car on Knight Street, Monday morning, and died in an ambulance en route to the C.M.G. Hospital. He had been afflicted by a heart ailment some time.
Mr. Hascall was born at Durham, Sept. 6, 1875, the son of James A. and Maleen Carpentier Hascall. He came to Auburn 50 years ago and in 1899 married Nellie M. Libby of Auburn. He was employed 20 years by the E.W. Penley Co., a short time by the J.C. Wilson Co. of Main Street, Auburn, and 10 years by the Haskell Implement and Seed Co., Lewiston. The past several years he had been employed as a domestic nurse. He was a member of Lake View Grange, Androscoggin Pomona, and was a seventh degree member of the State Grange.
Surviving, besides his widow, who is secretary of the Maine State grange, are a son, Lawrence E. Hascall of Auburn; four grandchildren; a brother, Chellis G. Hascall of Durham; and three nieces.

April 26, 1976Nellie Libby Hascall, 98, of Auburn, died Sunday at the Lovelett Nursing Home. Born July 15, 1877 at Young's Corner, the daughter of Eugene Harvey Libby of Hillsdale College, Michigan. She was educated in Auburn schools and was graduated from Edward Little High School in 1894 with highest honors. She taught in Auburn schools for five years until her marriage in 1899 to Charles H. Hascall, who died many years ago. She later did substitute teaching and resided in Auburn all her life except for one year in Durham following her marriage.
A distinguished Granger, she joined Lakeview Grange in 1892: was secretary for many years and also pianist. She was Master for four years, served as secretary to Androscoggin Pomona Grange for 38 years and as State Grange secretary for 34 years equaling the all time record of her father. She was a member of the Grange circle and pianist for many Grange functions including the State Grange.
A charter member of the Auburn Women's Extension group, who served as project leader for many years and served on the Twin City Extension Executive Board for seven years. She was also a member of the organization for over 53 years.
She was a member of the West Auburn Congregational Church, the Androscoggin Historical Society, the Sunshine Society, a former member of the Aramaic Society and the Auburn Senior Citizens.
She was honored an Outstanding Citizen by Twin County Extension Service for exceptional leadership, friendliness, helpfulness, optimism and looking ahead for the best of everything for her family, community, state and nation. Very few women have a record of equal public service.
She was honored as Secretary Emeritus of the State Grange, the first and one of two to [balance of obituary in next column, need copy]

He was a member of the West Auburn Congregational Church; Stephens Mills Grange; The Androscoggin Pomona Grange, Maine State Grange and the National Grange. He was also a past master of the Lakeview Grange and a member of the Royal Arcanum of Auburn.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia; and two sons, Lawrence Jr., and James, all of Pinellas Park; two daughters, Constance Hascall, Pinellas Park;, and Mrs. Carol Libby, Auburn, four crandchildren; and his mother, Mrs. Nellie M. Hascall, Auburn.

He was a farmer and lived on Durham all his life. He was a 50 year member of Eureka Grange and attended the Methodist Church at West Durham. He served as road commissioner for the town several terms.
Surviving are his widow, the former Ada Rose Libby whom he married in 1903; a daughter, Mrs. Arline Brown, Portland and two grandchildren.

June 24, 2002Yarmouth - Arline H. Brown, 90, of Bayview Street, Yarmouth, died Friday, June 21, 2002 at Brentwood Manor in Yarmouth.
Arline was born Sept. 7, 1911 in Durham, the daughter of Chellis C. And Ada Libby Hascall. She attended schools in Yarmouth, and graduated from the North Yarmouth Academy. During her working years she was employed at Owen Moores store, retiring after 28 years. Arline was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, and also a member of the Durham Grange.
She enjoyed embroidering and needlework and her passion was working in her garden and tending to her plants. Arline also enjoyed reading mystery novels, she really enjoyed being around her family.
Arline is survived by her daughter, Barbara Clark and her husband, Leslie of Yarmouth; her son, Peter Brown and his wife Marcia of Georgetown, Mass.; Arline is also survived by her four grandchildren, Brenda grace, Betina Clark, Jennifer Chau, Jeffrey Brown; and one great grandchild, Zachary Chau.

Charlie Hascall, who, following graduation from Harvard Medical School, spent 35 years as a Navy medical officer specializing in pathology, died Jan. 28, 2006, two months before his 93rd birthday, it has just been learned.
He served in a number of Naval hospitals, from Chelsea, Mass., to San Francisco and Beaufort, S.C. During the Korean War he served in Japan and, as he later wrote, "came to like the country and the people very much."
In retirement Charlie indulged his lifelong interest in automobiles, of which he owned several older ones, including three Bugattis ("No," he wrote, "they're French, not Italian"). He also enjoyed doing his own house maintenance, yard work, etc.
"I've been happy," he wrote in 1984, "and it has been a good life. Frustrations, sadness, disappointment, of course, but by and large it has been productive, gratifying, and enjoyable."

She retired as a teacher and moved to Vero Beach with her husband H. Burdette Pratt, who predeceased her and she was also predeceased by her sisters, Olive Hascall Berry and Lillian Norma Hascall.

Born in Riverside, a daughter of the late Dr. Theodore C. and Emma F. (Manchester) Hascall, she attended schools in the Riverside section of city and was a graduate of East Providence High School. She received bachelors and masters degrees in education from Boston University. Miss Hascall was employed as a womens physical education teacher at the Wellesley Junior High School for more than 30 years, starting in the 1940s and ending with her retirment in the mid 1970s. She was a member of the Wellesley Teachers Association, the P.E.O. Chapter B of Needham, the First Congregational Church of Natick and did volunteer work for the Natick Service Council.
Survivors are two sisters, Ruth Hascall Pratt of Millis, Mass. and Vero Beach, Fla. and Olive Frances Berry of Riverside.

He was born at Durham, April 17, 1875, son of Ralph J. and Rozilla Nichols Hascall. He was married to the former Sophronia Dlint in April 1898. He was a millwright in the employ of Carroll-Jellerson Shoe Co., for 20 years until 1936. After that, he was employed in local garages as a mechanic. Mr. Hascall was a member of Oxford Lodge, AF and AM; Oxford Chapter, OES; Alfred S. Kimball, Canton; Mt. Hope Rebekah Lodge; and Norway Lodge, IOOF, in which he was trustee for 25 years, and a past noble grand and past district deputy. He was also a member of Wildey Encampment, of which he was a past chief patriarch. He was a member of the Universalist parish.

She was a member of the Oxford Chapter, OES, and served as a chaplain for many years. Mrs. Hascall was also a member of Mt. Hope Rebekah Lodge 48 years and had served as chaplain for 25 years. She was a past noble grand and a past district deputy of the Rebekah Lodge. She was also a member of the First Universalist Church.

November 6, 1979Norway - Mrs. Nora H. Newcomb, 76, died suddenly Sunday evening at the Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.
She was born in Norway May 6, 1903, the daughter of William J. and Fronie Flint Hascall. She was a graduate of Norway High School, class of 1921, and was a bookkeeper for many years, being employed at the Norway shoe shops, the L. M. Longley and Son Co. and the E. H. Newcomb Electrical Co. in Norway.
She was a lifelong resident of the Norway community and was married to Floyd A. Harlow in 1965. She later married Edward H. Newcomb, who died in 1970.
She was a member and past matron of the Oxford Chapter OES: a member and past noble grand of the Mount Hope Rebekah Lodge in Norway; past district deputy president of District 7; conductor of the Rebekah Assembly of Maine; member of the Norway Universalist Church and Ladies Circle; a former member of the Stone Smart American Legion Auxiliary; and a charter member of the Floyd A. Harlow Jr. VFW post in Norway, which was named after her son who died in action in 1944.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Greenlaw of Cockeysville, Md.; one stap daughter, Mrs. Marioon Quinn of Norway; one granddaughter, one great grandsons and two step grandsons.

February 11, 1966Norway - Floyd A. Harlow, 63, of 25 William St., Westbrook, died in a local hospital, Thursday morning after a brief illness. He was born at South Paris, June 30, 1902, son of Earl and Bertha Conley Harlow.
Mr. Harlow had lived at Westbrook for eight years, coming from Norway where he had spent the greater part of his life. He attended schools at Worcester, Mass., before moving to Norway, where he was associated in the insurance business for many years. He later was employed at Sebago Moc at Westbrook.
Surviving are his widow, Margaret Morse Harlow, Westbrook; a daughter, Mrs. John Greenlaw, Auburn; a son, Dennis A. Westbrook; and a grandchild.

April 5, 2008NORWAY - Mary Kimball Sarrasin Hascall, 101, formerly of West Paris, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at the Norway Rehabilitation Center in Norway. She was born in West Paris, on December 5, 1906 to Oscar and Annie Bacon Kimball. When she was tragically orphaned at age five, she was brought up by Mr. and Mrs. John Swift of Beverly, MA.
She married Arthur Sarrasin in 1928 and lived principally in Portsmouth, NH and various MA towns where her husband worked as a machinist. They had one daughter, Joan Mary. When Mr. Sarrasin died in 1969, she moved back to her roots in the Oxford Hills area of Maine. Here she met and married Ralph Hascall of Norway, who passed away in 1977.
She was a member of Saint Catherine's of Sienna Catholic Church, the Heywood Club, and the Mayflower Society.
Throughout her long life, she was devoted to her family. She enjoyed knitting and sewing and made them many beautiful quilts and afghans that serve them still in her memory. She also enjoyed the bus trips and European tours with her daughter, Joan, and local friends.
Mrs. Hascall is survived by her daughter, Joan Flint and son-in-law, George; two grandsons, Christopher and his wife, Lori, and Eric and his former wife, Jeannie Reichle; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Ethan, Kellsie, and Christopher II; a special niece, Ruth Wentworth of Oxford, and many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Vernal Kimball of Hartford and Gerald Kimball of South Paris and two sisters, Helen Whittum and Ola Beal, both of Mechanic Falls.

August 27, 1973Norway - Evelyn S. Hascall, 67, of Crockett Ridge Road here, died Saturday at a Lewiston hospital.
She was born at North Waterford, Aug. 27, 1905, daughter of Irving and Melvina Hilton Stanley. She graduated from Paris High School, class of 1923 and married Ralph Hascall on July 2, 1927. She was employed in the local shoe factories until retirement in 1967. She was a member of the Norway Universalist Church, the Clara Barton Guild and was a former member of Mt. Hope Rebekah Lodge, Norway.
Surviving are her husband of Norway; a daughter, Mrs. Carmil Brown, of Sudbury, Mass., and three grandchildren.

May 17, 1934Herbert E. Hascall of Auburn, died Wednsday evening at his home, 82 Manley street after a long illness, his condition having been serious for nearly three weeks. Mr. Hascall was born in Durham Mar. 17, 1877, the son of Ralph and Rose M. Hascall. He had lived in Auburn over 30 years and until his recent illness he had been employed at the Fitz Brothers last factory.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice L. Hascall; a son Lewis Hascall of Auburn; two brothers, William J. Hascall of Norway, and Elmer S. Hascall of Monmouth; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Day, Mrs. Lena Jumper of Lewiston; Mrs. Thelma Watson of Auburn, and Mrs. Bertha Frost of Monmouth; and a granddaughter Marjorie Hascall of Auburn.
Mr. Hascall was a member of Abou Ben Adhem lodge of Odd Fellows, and Liberty Rebekah ;odge.

She was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, August 13, 1882, and had made her home in Auburn for 46 years. She was the widow of Herbert E. Hascall. She was a member of Liberty Rebekah Lodge, Worumbus Auxiliary of the Patriarch, Militant, IOOF, and Trinity Episcopal Church.
She is survived by one granddaughter Marjorie L. Hascall of Auburn; several cousins.

February 19, 1945Lewis H. Hascall, 43, of 122 Hampshire Street, Auburn, died this noon at the Central Maine General Hospital, where he had been rushed when taken ill at work this mornong. Mr. Hascall was employed by the Lewiston-Auburn Transit Company.
Born January 2(sic), 1902, he was the son of Alice Hascall and the late Herbert E. Hascall. He was well known in musical circles locally and formerly operated a taxi business here. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his mother, his widow, Dorothy L. Hascall and a daughter, Marjorie.

Jumper, 83, of 264 Pine St., Lewiston, died Thursday night at St. Mary's General Hospital after being a patient there one month, Born at New Gloucester, May 25, 1888, the daughter of Ralph J. and Rose Nochols Hascall, she came to Lewiston as a young woman and had lived here since then. She was educated in local schools and was employed at Bradford & Conant for many years, retiring 20 years ago.
Survivors include one son, Fred O. Jumper of Lewiston; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

June 22, 1994Lewiston - Fred O. Jumper, 89, of 236 Russell St., died Monday evening at his home. He was born in Lewiston May 7, 1905, the son of Fred L. and Lena Hascall Jumper. He was educated in local schools and graduated from Jordan High School. He was employed by Maine Central Railroad in the Freight Department, retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Masons and St. Patrick's Church.
Surviving are his wife, the former Florence Darling, whom he marrued Jan. 28, 1930; a daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Constance) Reardon of Lewiston; two sons, David and Donald, Of Lewiston; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

August 16, 1962Monmouth- Mrs. Bertha M. Frost, 70 died at her home Wednsday after a short illness. She was born in Auburn, Aug. 22, 1891, the daughter of R. J. and Rose Nichols Hascall and in 1908 she married Reginald Frost, Monmouth, at Auburn. Mrs. Hascall attended Monmouth schools.
She is survived by her husband, Reginald, Monmouth; a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Safford, Waterville; a son Elton, Monmouth; a brother, Elmer Hascall, Monmouth; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Jumper, Lewiston; and Mrs. Thelma Watson, Auburn; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

September 3, 1975Monmouth - Reginald O. Frost, 90, died unexpectedly Monday at his home. He was born June 25, 1885, at Monmouth, the son of Oliver and Mary Prescott Frost. He was graduated from Monmouth Academy. He married Bertha Haskall at Monmouth in 1908. She died in 1962. Mr. Hascall was a carpenter and farmer all his life. He was a member of Cochnewagan Lodge, K of P.

November 30, 1982Monmouth - Elton P. Frost, 72, died Sunday at the Kennebec Valley Medical Center - Augusta Division. He was born Oct. 20, 1910 in Monmouth, the son of Reginald and Bertha Hascall Frost. He was educated in Monmouth and graduated from Monmouth and Hebron acadamies. He attended Northeaster University, Boston, Mass. Mr. Frost was a poultry farmer and custodian. In 1945 he married Ida Libby in Auburn.
Survivors include his widow of Monmouth; a daughter, Barbara Labbe of Plainfield, Illinois; and five grandchildren.

July 29, 1969Monmouth - Elmer S. Hascall, 74, died unexpectedly at his home Monday. Born in Durham, March 27, 1895, he was the son of Ralph J. and Rozella Nichols Hascall. He was educated in Monmouth. In 1917, he married in Norway, the former Ruby Day of Monmouth.
For many years, he manufactured moccasins in Monmouth and operated the E. S. Hascall Grain Store. Recently, he was an assistant pathologist at Highmoor Farm. He was the town clerk of Monmouth for 43 years and was a member of the 88th Legislature as a representative fro Monmouth, Litchfield and Winthrop. Mr. Hascall was also a member of the Methodist Church, and past master and 50 year member of Monmouth Lodge, AF and AM, and past patron and 50 year member of Boynton Chapter, OES.
Survivors include his widow of Monmouth, a daughter, Mrs Jean Walker, Monmouth, a sister, Mrs. Lena Jumper, Lewiston; and two grandchildren.

July 7, 1982Monmouth - Mrs. Ruby Day Hascall, 90, died Tuesday at the Heritage Home, Winthrop, after a short illness. She was born April 17, 1892, in Monmouth, daughter of Eugene and Myra Wadsworth Day. Educated in Monmouth, she graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1910. She taught school for many years and was chief operator of the LG and M Telephone Co for many years. In 1917, she was married to Elmer Hascall, who died in 1969. She was a member and past matron of Boynton Chapter, OES and was a member of the United Church of Monmouth where she was organist for 45 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jean Walker, Monmouth; two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Find-a-GraveMONMOUTH - Jean Hascall Walker, 84, a resident of Welch Avenue, Monmouth, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 14, 2011, at D'Youville Pavilion in Lewiston. She was born in Monmouth on Dec. 2, 1927, the daughter of Elmer S. and Ruby M. Day Hascall. She was a 1946 graduate of Monmouth Academy, attended Bates College and graduated from the University of Maine in Orono. On Dec. 2, 1950, in Monmouth, Jean and Robert N. Walker were married; they just celebrated 61 years of marriage on Dec. 2. Jean was a school teacher and taught in the towns of Monmouth and Wales, retiring after teaching 22 years in Wales.
She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, past worthy matron, Boynton Chapter, a member of the Monmouth Community Church, where she sang with the choir and was also the choir director, she played the organ and was also a reporter for the Kennebec Journal newspaper. She enjoyed singing, playing the piano and attending Masonic events with her husband.
She is survived by her husband, Robert N. Walker of Monmouth; her son, David Walker and his wife, Audrey, of Monmouth; her daughter, Norma Sprague, of Monmouth; five grandchildren, Amanda Bunker and her husband, Kevin, of Brunswick, Alyson Walker of Seattle, Jason R. Sprague and Jared Walker, both of Monmouth, and James R. Sprague Jr., of El Paso, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Natalie and Alexandra Bunker and Ethan Burnham.
