An Illustrated History of Umatilla County
By Colonel William Parsons
Published by W. H. Lever, 1902Fred W. Hascall, Among the rising young agriculturists and stockmen of our county there are none more promising than the man whose name is at the head of this article. He is a worthy descendant of a distinguished family, a scion that promises to do honor to the ancestral tree. His family are direct descendants of Governor Bradford, who came over on the Mayflower.
Our subject was born in Rutland county, Vermont, on January 17, 1866, whence his parents took him to Maine when he was four years of age, where he remained four years, returning at that time to Vermont. Here he remained until he was eighteen years of age, receiving in that time a good education from the public and private schools of that section. When he arrived at man's estate he turned his face westward with continuos purpose until he landed in Umatilla county in 1884, and located in Pilot Rock. Here he commenced operations as a sheep herder for J.E. Smith and George Olcott, and continued thereat for three years. At that time he had saved sufficient to warrant him engaging in business for himself, his first experience being with a bunch of cattle he purchased. He also bought a ranch on Birch Creek, where we now find him, having been continuously occupied in stack raising with this as his headquarters. To the original ranch he has added from time to time until he now owns an elegant domain of eight hundred acres, all of which is used to raise hay and for his large herds of cattle. He has some fine graded stock, principally cattle, although he was handling sheep for two years.
In the city of Pendleton, on February 28, 1892, he was married to Miss Frankie M. Mulkey, a native of this state, whose parents were early pioneers here. To them have been born three children, Percy E., Lester E., and Nettie E. In political matters Mr. Hascall has always manifested a lively and intelligent interest, being known as an Independent, believing that principle in politics is as useful as in any other line of business.

November 2, 1987Wasn't he cute? Percy Hascall
The picture in Stewards Old Timer Contest on October 19 was Percy Hascall when he was two years old taken at Bowens Studio in Pendleton. It was standard in those days for boys to wear dresses all fancy with eyelet embrodery, flounces and ruffles.
Percy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hascall was born Apr. 4, 1894 on West Birch on the place where Leland Post now lives, and Emil Belkes lived until recently.
Percy was a ranch boy and worked with his dad and brothers on the 2000 acre place where they raised hay on the bottom land and ran horses and cattle.
Pilot Rock was pretty small in those days. He remembers Sturtevant's store, a big white one, all open underneath where the kids used to play in the dirt. It stood on the corner where Perkin's Service Station is now. Then there was "Paddle Foot" who had the leather goods store.
Sylvester's Grocery Store that stood on Stewart's parking lot. Later it was torn down and his uncle Gene Hascall and Mr. Hale the latter of Pendleton put up a garage. The Pilot Rock Lumber Co. was in it later. He recalled it was then torn down and Sully Reimer put up a building occupied by K and R Grocerry and Pilot Rock News. Later the building was purchased by Bill Blowers who enlarged and remodeled for his grocert store.Percy went through the 8th grade at the old Byrd School on Birch Creek. The one room school building is still standing. Early day teachers including Mrs. Allard, Mrs. Della Mulkey who was Percy's aunt; Roy Montgomery, Carrie Haycock who was Mrs. Gordon Chapman's mother.
Other members of the Hascall family were Lester, who recently passed on, Nettie Hascall Cable of Pilot Rock and Marian Hascall Male of Hermiston.
Later Percy stayed in Pendleton and attended business college across from the Temple Hotel then known as The Dorian.
Courtin'
Sadied Cable, who was to become Mrs. Percy Hascall, lived on the old Truman Cable place now owned by Mrs. Neal White. It was in 1918 that Percy came down and asked her to go to the show. Their first date was a shown in Pendleton. They went in a Ford that in those days had three little windows in the back. They went to all the country dances where they danced quadrilles, two steps and waltzes in all the homes up and down the Creek. Friday nights they went to the Pine Grove School on up the creek from Byrd School for the literary debates. The topics were issues of the times. The school has now been remodeled into a home by Mrs. and Mrs. Walter Jones.
Sadie recalls doing the janitor work at the Byrd School for $35 a month. She built the fires, scrubbed the floors once a month and carried water two miles to the school.
On Jan 12, 1920 they were married by the Justice of the Peace in Pendleton. They came back home and everyone on the Creek had congregated to welcome them. They danced until 5 in the morning at the Cable home.Their first six years they lived where Wadle Markgraf now lives. They raised hay which they sold and which was fed out there on the place. K.G. Warner brought in a band of sheep and Robert Bond of Ukiah brought in 300 head of cattle. His place was the place the Robert Fletchers now have in Ukiah.
Then they moved up on his Grandad's place (Charles D. Hascall) where Howard Bielke now lives. Percy worked in the woods for his Uncle Jim Hascall who had the Hascall Saw Mill above the Catlett place. Precy worked at carpentry and recalls working in 20 degrees below zero weather on the George Rugg Sheep Sheds on Butter Creek. He helped build the Gibson sheep sheds on East Birch Creek.
In 1936 they bought the Al James place wherer they have lived ever since. They lived in the old house on the place built before 1878. The marvel that the old house is still standing as they say there isn't a 2x4 on it.
In 1961 they started building their new house which they moved into in 1963. Their sons and friends helped with the building. Sadie, a genuine hobbyist, has the yard cleared and ready for seeding. They had four sons and one daughter : Henry at home, Wayne and Gilbert in Pilot Rock, John at Halfway and Velma (Mrs. Truman Cross) also in Pilot Rock, Sadie says they were all born at St Anthonth's Hospital which is where this interview was held as Percy is there undergoing some tests. Sadie is there from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with him. She did most of the talking with a few answers from Percy. We hope it won't be long until they'll both be back "up the Creek" where they both love it very much.

From The Centennial History of Oregon
Arthur E. Hascall has for sixteen years been engaged in the stock business and general farming in Umatilla county in the vicinity of Pine Grove post office, where he owns a ranch of four hundred and forty acres. He was born in Durham, Maine, on the 22d of May 1872, a son of Charles D. and Ellen C. (Warner) Hascall, the father a native of the state of New York and the mother of Vermont. In 1885 they crossed the plains to Oregon with their family, locating in this county in December of that year and have ever since made this their home.
The boyhood and youth of A.E. Hascall were largely devoted to the acquirement of an education and to assisting his father with the cultivation of the ranch. When he attained his majority he left the parental roof and went out to make his own way in the world. For two years thereafter he devoted his energies to lumbering, but he gave up this occupation at the expiration of that time and turned his attention to stock raising and general farming. Having been reared on a ranch he was perfectly familiar with both lines of the business and was well qualified to succeed as he had received a good practical training under his father. As his means were somewhat limited it was necessary for him to begin in a small way, but he extended his activities as he prospered and his ranch now contains four hundred and forty acres of good land. His fields are devoted to the raising of such cereals as are best adapted to the soil and annually yield him abundant harvests. A man of practical ideas and good judgement, Mr. Hascall keeps a good grade of stock, believing that the expense of maintaining an inferior animal is as great as for a good animal, while the former always commands a much less price in the market. He is prospering because he has applied himself closely and energetically to his undertakings, his success being entirely attributable to his own efforts.
In 1896 Mr. Hascall was united in marriage to Miss Maggie Palmer, who was born in Shelby county, Iowa, a daughter of S.B. and Mary Palmer, both natives of the state of New York. From their they subsequently removed to Iowa, making their home in that state until the early '80s when they came to Oregon, where they both passed away. Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Hascall, as follows: Charles B., Cecil S., Mary E., Virgil E., and Daphne A.
The fraternal relations of Mr. Hascall are confined to his membership in Pilot Rock Lodge, No. 155, I.O.O.F., and in matters politic he is a republican and for twelve years served on the board of school directors in his district. He has made orderly progression in development of his interests as he is a man of definite purpose, who concentrates his entire powers upon the achievement of his ambition.
