Chicago Tribune (IL)
November 27, 1997Louise Fentress Barry, 89, former president of the North Shore Chapter of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, had been active with world issues involving peace, disarmament and freedom for more than 60 years. She was honored in 1988 by Glenview as a "Peace Patriot."
A resident of Glenview since 1941, she died at home Wednesday
"Peace to her meant everyone living together with justice," said her husband, Dr. Scammon Barry. "She felt the world should be at one with itself. Louise worked with causes that she felt were realistic. She was not interested in the pie-in-the-sky ones. Helping others was very important to her, but she was also a strong family person."
Her activities ranged from cutting out articles and sending them to people to demonstrating in front of the local post office against the draft during the Vietnam War. She was a prime mover in establishing the Peace Museum in Chicago and lent her time and financial support to organizations such as Sane Freeze and the North Shore Peace Initiative.
She was a founder in Glenview of the League of Women Voters.

Wilmette Life (IL)
January 15, 1998Fravel Scammon Barry, 91, a physician in Evanston and Glenview for more than 50 years, died Jan. 4 at his Glenview home.
Dr. Barry was the great-grandson of Chicago pioneer Jonathan Young Scammon, who came to Chicago in 1835 and played a key role in establishing public schools, banking and the city's first railroad.
Dr. Barry's father, Dr. George F. Barry, was a physician at the turn of the century and his young son often rode along with him in their horse-drawn carriage to make house calls.
Dr. Barry graduated from Evanston Township High School, Northwestern University and Northwestern's medical school.
"He had an active, inquiring mind and always continued to learn and to stay current," his daughter Anne B. Hudson said. "Medically, his judgment was very astute and his bedside manner 'the best on the North Shore.' As a doctor, he was not only kind, understanding and patient, but also capable of 'telling it like it is.' "
Dr. Barry served in the Pacific during World War II and upon his return he began his 55-year residence and medical practice in Glenview.
His strongest interests included photography, travel and gardening. With his wife, Louise, who died on Nov. 26, 1997, he traveled extensively and often gave talks and slide shows about their early visits to the Soviet Union, China, Africa, Central Asia and South America.
Survivors, besides his daughter, include a son, Fentress, of Deerfield; two sisters; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.
