31224. George Waite Buckingham
Flint News Advocate January 18, 1938
Meet The Home Folks
George Waite Buckingham of Buckingham Clothing store has lived in Flint f
or what he describes as "31 long years." It is not that "Buck's" life has been inactive or uninteresting; maybe there have been too many recessions, for he says these days go especially hard with him.
A born athlete from the day he slid down the water sluices around the Walker school on the tops of garbage cans until today, when he takes his children to Kearsley park and helps them use their sleds, Buckingham still enjoys the great outdoors.
He spent most of his high school days on the West Coast except for a few months in Flint schools and in Clark school in New Hampshire. Football, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, track and skiing were a few of the things in which he participated in prep school.
He entered Dartmouth and there apparently, his exploits were many. Down at the foot of a steep hill on the Connecticut river, Buckingham ran an eating club whose cuisine was unmatched anywhere in town, it is said, and its fame is still being broadcast from the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity house where Waite lived. History was his major subject and he graduated in 1928 after four years of good scholastic records. He plans to return to those New Hampshire hills this June for the first time to celebrate the 10th reunion of his class.
Since college Waite has done a number of things including getting married. A brokerage job he held for a while, he dropped shortly after the historic '29 crash. It was about that time, his friends say that his golf game was at its best. He still wields his woods and irons with skill and manages to place well in local tournaments.
For the last six years, he has helped run Buckingham's clothing store down on Saginaw and Kearsley streets. He lives at 721 Blanchard avenue.
Pasadena Star-NewsOn February 21, 2016 Susan B. Ring passed away peacefully at age 83. It was the end of an era for an indomitable woman who transformed everyone she met with her kindness, love, and generosity.
Susie was born in Flint, Michigan on July 12, 1932 to Louise and George Buckingham, the oldest of three girls. She attended William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri, and went on to become an administrator at GMI Institute in Flint, where she met her first husband Ted Broderick.
They had two children, Linda Susan and Michael. After Susie's first marriage ended, she remarried Benjamin Ring and the two relocated to Lacey, Washington, a small town outside of Olympia. There they spent some 20 happy years until Ben died in 1987. Susie then took a job at the Department of Natural Resources for the state of Washington before retiring in 1997.
While living in Washington, Susie became a diehard Mariners and Seahawks fan. "Ringlet," her clown persona, was also born in Washington. Susie, in her 60s, went to clown school and performed "clown ministry," doing a comedy routine for local hospitals, charities, and schools.
In Michigan and Washington, Susie enjoyed many volunteer associations, including the Junior League of Flint, the Vestry and Altar Guild in Flint, and St. Benedict's Church in Lacey. She also volunteered for the Washington State capital, served as a docent for the Governor's Mansion, and was a member of the Olympia Symphony Guild.Eleven years ago, Susie moved to South Pasadena to be closer to her family, and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She bought a shiny blue PT Cruiser and became a well-known fixture in town. Everyone brightened when they saw Susie pull up in a car as vibrant as her spirit.
In South Pasadena, as with every city she lived, Susie jumped in with both feet to become an essential and valued member of the community. Susie will always be remembered for her easy grace and her ability to befriend anyone and everyone.
Susie is survived by her sister, Betsy Carta; daughter Linda D'Oro and son-in-law Frank; son Mike Broderick; step children Stanley Ring, Francine Anton, Stephen Ring, and Gregory Ring; grandchildren Jessica Gonzalez, Jill Renninger, Anthony and Sydney D'Oro, Ashley and Jacob Broderick, Tracie and Matthew Ring, Ben and Anna Ring, and David and Erica Ring; and five great grandchildren.
She was pre-deceased by her sister Mimi Buckley.
