Lewis H. Bullard, President
Kalamazoo Sheet Metal Manufacturing Company
172 East Water Street, Kalamazoo, MichiganLewis H(ubbard) Bullard was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., Apr. 8, 1866; son of Zenis Hubbard and Amand (Graves) Bullard.
Lewis H. Bullard, the subject of this sketch, attended pub. schs., in Kalamazoo, Mich. He learned the sheet metal trade, and in 1891 began the mfr. of slot machines. He later mfd. steel boats. Mr. Bullard moved his factory to Detroit, Mich., where he remained one and a half years. He retd. to Kalamazoo, where, fo 4 years, he engaged in the mfr. of folding beds, which he previously invented. Mr. Bullard was employed by Upjohn Co., 5 years, as a machinist, during which time he invented many machines used in the business. In 1909 he purchased the sheet metal shop of Edwards & Chamberlin, which business was incorporated in 1911 under the name, Kalamazoo Sheet Metal Manufacturing Co. Mr. Bullard has served as pres. of the company since 1930. He has completed approximately 40 inventions. He is ind. in politics, and is a mem. of the Kalamazoo Chapter of the Citizens Hist. Assn. His favorite recreations are hunting and fishing. The family reside at Gull Lake, where Mr. Bullard maintains a boathouse and several boats.
In May 1893, Lewis H. Bullard married Effie Congdon, who was born in Kalamazoo, Mich. Mrs. Bullard died in Mar. 1936. The only child of this marriage, Earl Bullard was born Aug. 6, 1899. He was graduated from Central High Sch., and Parsons Business Sch., both of Kalamazoo. He now is sec.-treas. of the Kalamazoo Sheet Metal Manufacturing Co.
He married Anne Sloane, and they reside on Richland Mich. Mr. and Mrs. Bullard are the parents of one child Robert Bullard who was born Oct. 20, 1924.
Addendum May 17, 1994
Both the Bullard and Graves families were residents of Kalamazoo by 1860, according to the U.S. Census of that year. The name of the mother of Amanda (Graves) Bullard was Lewanda (Lampson) Graves and not Amanda. [ Sic; there is no subtantiation for the above; Amanda's mother was Lurena Ganson ] Luther Graves was at one time the mayor of Rochester N. Y. before establishing residence in Kalamazoo.
Lewis H. Bullard had two brothers (William and Chandler) and three sisters (Kitty, Lulu and Hatti).
To exploit his various inventions, Mr. Bullard founded (by 1899 or earlier) Western Novelty Company to manufacture slot machines amd metal row boats. Later this concern became the Michigan Steel Boat Co. It was sold and moved to Detroit in1901. The Bullard-Wheeler Bed Company, created to manufacture folding beds. was still in operation in 1905. In May 1907 the "tinning" and furnace operations of Edwards and Chamberlin Hardware Co. were sold to Kalamazoo Sheet Metal.
As concerns the collaboration of Mr. Bullard in the establishment of mass production facilities at Upjohn Co.: Beimg that Lewis (already a well known inventor by then) was engaged for the task as an "in-house" employee of Upjohn rather than having been retained as an ouside consultant, it meant that his solutions would be proprietary products of Upjohn rather than patentable in his own name. Because the purpose built machines he designed and manufactured were hand made and therefore were, in case of a breakdown, not repairable by the employ of standard parts, Upjohn Co. had Mr. Bullard maintain an ever ready set of pertinent spare parts. And these spares, still as late as 1940, were always kept stored in the company vault along side the corporate cash.
Lewis and his wife Effie were eventually divorced. In 1941, Mr. Bullard suffered a first stroke from which he never fully recovered. He died November 21, 1950. Mr. Bullard had a second child : On Jan. 9, 1929 to Lewis H. Bullard and Evelyn (Rouker) Unekis was born a son, Robert Lewis, who graduated from Barbour Hall Military (a former annex to Nazerath College) and from Georgia Institute of Technolgy. He and Eivor Ulestam (born in Sweden) married, and had two children and reside in France.
_____
Regarding marriage to Evelyn (Rouker) Unekis. Based on the fact that Mrs Evelyn Unekis is shown in the 1939 and 1943 city directory for Kalamazoo, and that the 1930 census shows Evelyn Unekis is shown as a married mother of Robert Unekis, I am of the opinion that she married Lewis Hubbard between 1943 and 1950. As to Robert Lewis, there is no record of a Robert Lewis Hubbard.
