Robert G. Hascall, of 380 El Ciellto Rd., a retired paint manufacturer, died early today in a local convalescent home following a long illness.

Mr. Hascall was born March 14, 1893, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Hattie and George Christy Hascall. He was educated in Ashville, N.C.  At the age of 18, Mr. Hascall obtained the services of a scientist and introduced a process for manufacturing an extremely durable paint product. He later joined a paint firm owned by his father and the late Roy Robinette. Upon the death of Mr. Robinette, he purchased controlling interest in the paint firm, which he retained until his retirement in 1950. He then moved to Santa Barbara with his family.

Mr. Hascall was a 50-year member of Gaston Allen Masonic Lodge, Lakewood, Ohio; a member of the Webb chapter of Royal Arch Masons in Cleveland; the Santa Barbara Club; Coral Casino and Birnam Wood Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Porter Hascall, of the home address; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Fortune, Santa Barbara, and Mrs. David G. Benedict of Australia, and six grandchildren.

Hascall, Mary Porter, long time resident of Santa Barbara and a member of the Assistance League of Santa Barbara died Thursday, June 11, 1992 at her home.

Mrs. Hascall and her late husband Robert G. Hascall along with their two daughters moved here in 1951. She was active in community works as well as serving on several boards. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, a Sunday School teacher and an elder of that church. She was a charter member of the Goleta Valley Art Association, a member of Birnam Wood Golf Club, Cottage Hospital Auxialliary and R.S.V.P.

She is survived by two daughters; Mrs. Barbara Fortune of Littleriver, CA and Mrs. Elizabeth of Australia, as well as six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

ALLEGAN -- Ruth Walser Effinger, 90, of Holland, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, in Holland Community Hospital.

Born in Ann Arbor, she attended the University of Michigan, and was a lifelong resident of Hinsdale, Ill., and Douglas.

She volunteered at St. Luke's Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago and Holland Community Hospital.

She and her husband founded Flying Colors Embroidery Shop in Hinsdale.

Surviving are her children, J. Robert and Kathy Effinger of Burr Ridge, Ill., and Peggy Hayes of Douglas; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, John, preceded her in death in 1973.

Wells Root, 92, screen and television writer whose credits included work on the adaptation of the classic 1937 film "Prisoner of Zenda" and the small screen's innovative anti-Western series "Maverick." A native of Buffalo, N.Y., and a graduate of Yale, Root began his career as a film and drama critic for the New York Globe. His film scripts included "I Cover the Waterfront," "Magnificent Obsession" and "Texas Across the River." He contributed regularly to such television series as "Ford Theater," "Four Star Theater" and "GE Theater." Root taught for many years at UCLA Extension and wrote a critically acclaimed writers' handbook titled "Writing the Script" in 1980. On March 8 in Woodland Hills.

Lon Hascall
Actor's last New York role was in Lysistrata

Lon Hascall, 60 years old, an actor who had appeared in Vaudeville and revues for years, died yesterday morning at his home in Red Bank, NJ He had been ill for the last six months.

Mr. Hascall was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., and started his stage career with Charles E. Blaney. He dropped his name Laurence and became known as Lon Hascall. His last New York role was in "Lysistrata." He was a member of Pacific Lodge, F. and A. M.; Mecca Shrine, The N.V.A.., Equity and the Grand Rapids Lodge of Elks.

Mr. Hascall is survived by a widow, two brothers, Clyde and Allen, and a sister Helen.

Laurens Hascall, profesionally known as Lon Haskell, 60 died at his home in Fair Haven, N.J., Dec. 13. Early in his stage career he appeared in Blaney melodramas, thereafter entering Columbia burlesque and for many seasons was with the Behman show. He played in a number of Winter Garden, New York musical revues. Last stage appearance was in Lysistrata. He was a mason and Shriner, Mecca Temple, also an Elk. His widow survives.

Mrs. Charles (Fae B. Joers) Hascall, 62, formerly of Tacoma, died Tuesday in Riverside, Calif. Born in Checotah, Okla.,

Mrs. Hascall lived in Tacoma since 1924. She and her husband moved to Hemet, Calif. two years ago. She had operated a beauty shop and had worked for 6th Avenue Realty and Warp Realty in Tacoma. Mrs. Hascall was a long time member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Tacoma.

Besides her husband, survivors include a sister, Mrs. Paulene Riordan of Hemet.

Survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ethel; daughter, Diane (Eric) Reishus; son, Richard (MaryAnn); daughter, Peggy Moon and her fiance, Jim Running; 6 grandchildren, Sandra, Brian (Rachel), Brent (Katie), Evan, Jennifer (John) and Jeffrey; 3 great-grandchildren, Elise, Lila and Ethan.

William Lane Heiser, 94, who lived in Winnetka from 1932 to 1985, died March 11 in King Home in Evanston. Mr. Heiser was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa and studied at Northwestern University, completing his sophomore year. During World War II served in the U.S. Army with the rank of major.

Mr. Heiser owned an import business from 1948 to 1975. He was a member of Christ Church in Winnetka where he taught Sunday School and was a member of the vestry.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet. Survivors include a son, William Doan (Loretta) Heiser of Flat Rock, N.C.; grandchildren Teresita Heiser of Seattle, Michelle Huse of Seattle, Carol Duggan of Winnetka, Martin Heiser, Ridgefield, Conn., and Tim Heiser of Yorkville; and a sister, Mary Jane Buchroeder, Port St. Lucie, Fla.
