La Porte, Ind., July 11 - (UP) - Homer Merrill. La Porte youth who attempted to sail a Chinese junk from Hongkong to New York and was forced to abandon his project in the middle of the Red Sea, was safely at home today.
He had covered more than half the distance to New York when the junk sprung so many leaks while being towed through the Red Sea by a Greek steamer that it had to be scuttled.
Merrill had his boat built in Hongking and refused an offer by Richard Halliburton, famed adventurer, to buy it. alliburton ordered a duplicate built for him and was lost in it in the Pacific Ocean, reportedly during a tropical storm.
The Pan-Jin, Merrill's junk traveled more than 10,000 miles before the seams were opened and it became inoperable.
