June 28, 2016100-year-old World War II veteran, Georgetown resident and member of First United Methodist Church Joseph Stuart "Stu" Schietinger passed away at Windsor Gardens Assisted Living on Saturday.
"Stuart was loved by many - sounds cliche, but so very true," said his niece Kimberly Madden. "Stuart beat up the doorways and walls quite a bit around the place when he missed the doorways in his electric wheelchair. He would say such things as "well, now who moved that doorway?" - (He was) always keeping things light. And the night he passed, the workers at Windsor Gardens teased that they weren't going to repair those spots."
Schietinger, who celebrated his centennial this past March, was an E-5 technical sergeant in the U.S. Army and served as a heavy truck and maintenance technician from 1942 until 1945.
He served overseas in Normandy in General George Patton's Third Army.
"His years of experience and perspective were very meaningful to us and he shared some great life stories. He was proudest of all to have served his country in World War II," Madden said.
Born on March 11, 1916, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Schietinger grew up there and opened a motorcycle shop in New Haven in 1939. He sold and repaired bikes, sponsored races and built race tracks.
Upon returning home from war, besides continuing to operate his shop, Schietinger traveled the world with his wife, Evelyn - visiting Spain, Thailand, India and Egypt, among other far-flung locales.
Evelyn passed away in 1991 after 50 years of marriage. Schietinger moved to Windsor Gardens in Georgetown in 2007 to be close to his family.
"(Stu) is one of the sweetest, nicest, most loving "grumpy" old men I have ever known. We love him dearly...," said Windsor Gardens director Carrie Johnson at Schietinger's 100th birthday celebration in March.
Schietinger leaves behind many nieces and nephews in Connecticut and Kentucky.
"We have lost a very special part of our Windsor Gardens family. Stuart lived here for nine years and was the "patriarch" of Windsor. We will certainly miss him but are so fortunate to have had him in our lives," Johnson said Monday morning.
