The Deseret News (Salt Lake City, UT)
December 8, 2013Lynn Allen passed away December 3, 2013 in Salt Lake City, UT. He was 93. Born to James & Ellen Allen on July 16, 1920 in LaBelle, ID. The youngest of 6 children, he was always a contributor to his impoverished family, helping out by delivering newspapers during the depression, for much of his childhood.
Lynn served his country in World War II as a communications specialist in the United States Air Force. He met the love of his life, Gladys May Massey, at a dance in 1941. After his deployment to the South Pacific, they wrote each other constantly, and upon his return from the war, they would begin what would be a 67 year marriage on June 25, 1946.
They moved into a tiny apartment in Salt Lake City, barely making ends meet, and started looking for employment. Lynn eventually went to work for United Electric Supply Company on 4th South in Salt Lake City, the beginning of a 38 year career, ending with his retirement after opening a successful branch store in Logan, UT. In the 50's, Lynn & Gladys built a small house on Kensington Avenue on Salt Lake's east bench, and had two children, Kristine and David. He was active in the LDS, Mountain View 2nd Ward, as the Elders Quorum President, and volunteered his time to scouting and youth sports within his Ward & community. A kind and humble man, he was loved by everyone who knew him. He possessed a great sense of humor and a quick wit that always made people smile, even as recent as last week, cracking jokes with the CNAs at his Hospice Facility. He certainly leaves this earth a better place than he found it, and will be missed by everyone he touched.
He was predeceased by Gladys, the love of his life last February, and is survived by his daughter Kris Erkelens (Tom) and his son David Allen (Darla), grandchildren Thomas Christopher Erkelens (Julie), Tara Leard (Rob), Matt Erkelens (Nicole), Courtney Allen, and four beautiful great grandchildren!

March 3, 2013Gladys Allen passed away Feb. 22, 2013, in St. George, Utah. She was 92. She was born to Roy and Alice Massey on May 8, 1920, in Rouse, Colo. The third of three girls, she claims to have been born in a boxcar that was converted to an apartment by her father who worked for the Denver & Rio Grand Railroad. She had a very happy, but impoverished childhood, growing up during the depression. She particularly loved the family fishing trips in their old Model T Ford.
Gladys was always a bookworm and loved to read, which enabled her to start kindergarten at the age 4, and then continue her education, graduating with a fine arts degree from Pueblo Junior College. Until recently, she conquered the New York Times Crossword Puzzle on a weekly basis, always learning, always informed and always opinionated.
She met Lynn Nielsen Allen at a Beta Sigma Phi dance in 1941. Lynn was a Communications Specialist in the Air Force, stationed in Pueblo, Colo. Gladys says, "Lynn asked me to dance, and that was all she wrote!" It wasn't long after that when Lynn shipped out to the South Pacific for WWII. They wrote each other constantly and when he came home from the war. They were married June 25, 1946, and moved to Salt Lake City. Eventually building a little house on Kensington Ave. on the east bench of Salt Lake, they had two children, Kristine and David.
Gladys was a woman ahead of her time. She prospered in her career, working in accounting related positions, she eventually became the Treasurer of Reliance National Life Insurance Company and sat on their board of directors.
A fabulous wife, home maker, provider, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her progressive thinking and complete lack of religious or racial bigotry made her a model for all women, and anyone else who had the pleasure of knowing her.She is survived by Lynn, her loving husband of 67 years; her daughter Kristine Erkelens (Tom); her son David Allen (Darla); grandchildren: Thomas Christopher Erkelens (Julie), Tara Leard (Rob), Matt Erkelens (Nicole), Courtney Allen; and four beautiful great-grandchildren!
