Reed, Winfield J. 96, of Zion, IL, died on Friday, December 2, 2011 at home.

He was born September 12, 1915 in Kansas City, Kansas and came to Zion in 1924. He graduated from the Zion Schools at the College Building in 1932 and from Lake Forest College in 1936. Winfield was a member of Christ Community Church of Zion since 1925.
He worked at Burroughs Adding Machine Company from 1937 until 1943. He entered military service in 1941 and served 18 months in Europe with the 28th Infantry Division. He was discharged November 1943 with the rank of First Sgt. at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. While in service he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star.

He married his first wife, Jerry Romp in 1941 and his second wife, Hazel Nogle in 1997. Both have preceded him in death.

Winfield was President of Reed-Randle Motors of Waukegan and President of Reed-Randle Properties. He was a lifelong member of Waukegan Rotary Club, served as Chairman of the Board and Director of Zion State Bank, was Treasurer of Waukegan Y.M.C.A. and served as a Director of Zion Hospital, Rolling Hills Nursing Home, and North Skokie Drainage District.

Survivors include his two children, Richard D. (Karen A. McCann) Reed of Flagler Beach, FL and Penella S. (John) Reed-Sacco of Pound Ridge, NY; four grandchildren, Traci (Greg) Indlecoffer, Michelle (Greg) Storm, Cami (Joseph) Leuppino, and Nicole (James) Riess; eight great-grandchildren Hannah, Tessah, and Ross Indlecoffer, Gabe and Libby Storm, Grayson Leuppino, and Ellie and Jack Riess; and one brother Marlin D. (Donna) Reed of Lake Forest, IL.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jerry; his second wife, Hazel; and one sister and her husband, Marciel (Paul) Dunnick.

Hazel was born January 3, 1916 in Albion, Indiana and had lived in Zion, Illinois and Phoenix, Arizona. She attended school in Zion and was a long-time member of Christ Community Church of Zion and Mountain View Chapel in Phoenix. Hazel retired from Sears Roebuck & Company after 30 year

She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Nogle; brothers, Ted Hostetter, Floyd Hostetter, and Burnell Hostetter; and her parents, Charles and Ella Wert.

VIOLA, Ill. � Services for Maxine E. Woodward, 73, Viola, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Family Funeral Services, Viola. Burial will be in Viola Cemetery.

Mrs. Woodward died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island.

She was a homemaker, she did PAL work in the Sherrard School District for 8 years and she worked for Dr. Dadhaniya for five years.

Maxine Osborne was born June 15, 1927, in Elkhart, Ind., a daughter of Cliffton and Helen Osborne. She married Carlos R. Woodward on May 7, 1948, in Moline.

Maxine enjoyed playing the piano, and flowers. She loved her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Carlos; daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl Lasek, Moline, Cynthia and Dave Nicholson, Colona, and Cristine and Rich Werkheiser, New Windsor; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Marie Woodward, Houston; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Nadine and Hank Duyvejonck, Moline; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Woodward, Viola.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mathew in May, 1998; her parents; and a brother, Reed Osborne.

Carlos Woodward, 85, passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, in Houston, Texas.

He was born Dec. 1, 1926 in Moline and was a second generation lifelong resident in the Illinois Quad-Cities area.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Maxine, and his son Matt.

His career varied, but the majority of his working years he spent as president of Sterling Products in Moline.

He is survived by his three daughters, a son, as well as multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a devoted father and husband. May God hold him in the palm of his hand.

He died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

He was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Moline, son of Armand and Germaine Mortier Duyvejonck. He married Nadine Osborne Sept. 3, 1949, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island.

He retired in 1978 after 31 years at the former John Deere Plow Planter Works, Moline, as an assembler. After retirement he worked for Rock Island County Forest Preserve for 10 years.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving during the occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1947.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, VFW and Friends Circle Club, all of Moline. He was a former St. Mary's School Dad's Club coach and St. Mary's Church choir member. He enjoyed his grandchildren and his dog, Lucy.

Survivors include his wife; daughters and son-in-law, Sue Lenger, Rock Island, and Judy and Jim Silversmet and Jenny Milani, all of Moline; sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Karen, Moline, Cliff and Vickie, Andover, and Vince and Jan, Moline; 21 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sons, David and Joseph, and a brother, Julius.

Donald G. Reed, 88, of Cocoa Beach, FL died Friday (May 17, 2013).

Born in Kansas City, KS, son of the late Walter Joseph Reed and Jeanette (Fleming) Reed, he was raised in Kansas City and attended the University of Kansas for a year before enlisting in the US Navy in the Aviation V-5 Program. He graduated from NAS Pensacola as an Ensign, the third youngest officer in the Navy. His squadron, VPB 28 was called to combat duty in the Pacific from 1944 through 1945. He flew over 60 missions as a "Black Cat" pilot in PMB's over the South China Seas to Hong Kong and Formosa where his squadron sank more enemy ships than any other squadron in WWII. His unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their record. Personally he earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses, seven Air Medals, and Presidential and Navy Unit Citations.

After the war, he reentered the University of Kansas receiving his BA in 1946. He started his engineering career in Chicago with Otis Elevator and held management positions with Booz-Allen & Hamilton and Duff and Phelps among others. He held the position of Commissioner of Hospital and Health Care for the State of Connecticut and had been Managing Director of the Connecticut Development Authority. Upon retirement he reopened the Reed Group, Inc. and at the age of 77 he founded Eclipse Services, an Oil Field Services Company, with long-time partner and friend, J.C. Young, where he served as Chairman and Director of Finance.

He leaves his daughter, Barbara Leonard and her husband James of Avon; his son, Donald Reed, Jr. and his wife Dominique of Glenview, IL; grandchildren, Jessica and Patrick Leonard and Brittany and Christina Reed; and his long time companion and best friend, Clara "Bunny" Baur.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne Ellen (Messersmith) Reed in 1985.

Her husband Clarence F. Carlson died in 1991. She leaves two sons, Ernest D. Fales of Rutland and William D. Fales of Phoenix, Arizona; a daughter, Alice H. Keith of New River, Arizona; two brothers, Thomas M. McGann of Hollywood, FL and William McGann of Princeton; two sisters, Catherine Livingston of Paxton and Mary T. Jenza of Holden; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; many nephews and nieces.

Her first husband Ernest D. Fales died in 1969.

She was born in Rutland the daughter of Michael M. and Mary (Swenson [sic]) McGann, lived many years in Princeton and over 30 years in Holden. Mrs. McGann worked for the Barre Wool Combing Co. in South Barre for 15 years. She was a member of the Chaffin Congregational Church and enjoyed working in her garden.

PITTSFIELD -- Eleanor Page, 98, of Berkshire Place died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 21, 1905, daughter of Joseph and Mabel Brockway Ressler, she was a 1923 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

Mrs. Page was employed by the former Morton's Jewelers for more than 20 years, retiring in 1974. She also worked for Berkshire Gas Co. for several years.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star, for which she played the organ. She enjoyed baking and cooking.

She leaves two nephews, Everette Page of Dalton and Charles Page of Williamstown, Vt.

The bride was given in marriage by father. Mrs. Everett R. Page was her sister matron of honor and Miss Christine N. Ressler, niece of the bride was bridesmaid. The best man was Francis I. Page, brother of the bridegroom. Another brother, Everett R. Page and Joseph Cotton ushered.

Dalton - Charles Henry Watkins, 69, died suddenly at his home, 232 South Street, Saturday afternoon. Death was attributed to a heart condition. Born in Hinsdale, he was the son of the late George E. and Emily Loring Watkins. For the past 52 years he had lived in Dalton. Until his retirement, two years ago, he had been employed 40 years as a heating engineer at Crane & Company Inc.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Abbie Fox Watkins, he leaves a son, Francis of Pittsfield; four daughters, Mrs. Leo Condron of Dalton, Mrs. Thomas Tracey of Chester, Mrs. Mary Vosburg and Mrs, Laverne Taylor, both of Pittsfield.; three brothers, George of Hinsdale, Walter of Pittsfield, and Raymond of New Jersey; four sisters, Mrs. Helen Noble of Pittsfield, Mrs. A. Beauregard of New Haven Conn., Mrs. Frank Nowell and Mrs. Ariel Raymond, both of Becket, and 16 grandchildren.

DALTON - Leo J. Condron, 68, of 178 Park Ave., died this morning at the Pittsfield General unit, BMC, after a short illness. Born in Pittsfield, he had been a residemt of Dalton most of his life.

He was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School in Pittsfield and for the past 25 years he was a self employed real estate agent in Dalton. Previously he was employed as an automobile salesman for the former Donovon & Roberts Agency in Pittsfield.
He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church and a member of the church Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Dalton Lions Club and a past member of the Dalton Rotary Club.

He and his wife, the former Emily Watkins celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary in April. Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, John L. Condron of New Lebanon, N. Y., Thomas F. Condron of Pittsfield, C. Richard Condron of Southwick and Joseph M. Condron of Columbia, Md.; one daughter, Mrs. Grace E. Lombardi of Dalton, on brother, David J. Condron of Pittsfield and 15 grandchildren

Born in Dalton on Dec. 20, 1906, daughter of Charles and Abigail Fox Watkins, she attended schools in Dalton. She had resided in Chester for 72 years. Mrs. Tracey was a member of St. John's Church.

Her husband, Thomas E. Tracey, died in 1982.

She leaves a daughter, Rita A. Dempsey of West Springfield, and a sister, Eleanor Taylor of Lanesboro. She was predeceased by a son, Michael Tracey, who died in 1957.

LANESBOROUGH � Eleanor A. Taylor, 87, of 10 Opeechee St. died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Dalton on Feb. 21, 1918, daughter of Charles and Abigail Fox Watkins, she graduated from the former Dalton High School in 1936 and from the former Berkshire Business College. Mrs. Taylor was employed in the food service department at Mount Greylock Regional High School for 17 years. She was a communicant of North American Martyrs Church, a charter member of the West Shore Secret Pals Club, a member of the Lanesborough Seniors and the Pontoosuc Red Hat Society, and a Red Sox fan. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and baking.

She and her husband, Leverne H. Taylor, were married April 3, 1937. He died Oct. 10, 1983.
She leaves three sons, Leverne J. Taylor of Pittsfield, Robert G. Taylor of Lanesborough and Bruce F. Taylor of Pittsfield; two daughters, Eleanor Rosier, with whom she made her home, and Judith Sweener of Lanesborough; 34 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Charles and Norman Taylor, and by a daughter, Emily Amuso.

Burial will be in Southview Cemetery in North Adams.

Dalton - Pvt Charles H. Watkins Jr., of the Marines, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Watkins, South Street, is missing in action in the Southwest Pacific, the family has been informed by the War Department. No details were given in the telegram, which stated he was missing in line of duty.

Pvt. Watkins enlisted about a year ago and was called to active duty Jan. 11. He recieved boot training at Parris Island, N.C., spent a week's furlough at home then was shipped to the Southwest Pacific. He graduated from Dalton High School in June 1942, and was employed during much of his undergraduate days at Silvernail's Pharmacy, Inc.

His brother, Sea. 1c. George Watkins, attached to the subnarine service, lost his life near Norfolk, Va., in the fall of 1940. His body was shipped home in June 1941.

A telegram which gave no details, stated that a mistake had been made in listing the youth as missing last Nov. 17 and that he had been killed in action.

His older brother, Sea. 1c. George Watkins, attached to the subnarine service, lost his life near Norfolk, Va., in December, 1940. His body was shipped home in June 1941.

Pvt. Watkins enlisted and was called to active duty Jan. 1, 1943. He recieved boot training at Parris Island, N.C., spent a week's furlough at home then was shipped to the Southwest Pacific. He attended Craneville School and  graduated from Dalton High School in June 1942. During much of his high school days he was employed by Silvernail's Pharmacy, Inc. He and his high school chum Pvt. Fred Murray Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Murray, Curtis Avenue enlisted together. The latter is now in the Southwest Pacific.

Pvt. Watkins is survived by his Parents, four sisters, Mrs. John L. Condron of Dalton, Mrs. Lester Vosburg of Pittsfield, Mrs. Thomas Tracy of Chester and Mrs. Laverne Taylor of Lanesnoro and a brother, Francid, of Philadelphia.

Mrs. Mary E. Nowell, 82, former resident of Hinsdale, Dalton, Pittsfield and Becket., died yesterday afternoon at her home in Greenwich, N.Y., after a brief illness.
Born in Hinsdale, daughter of George and Emily Watkins, she was the widow of Frank E. Nowell. She moved to Greenwich five years ago. Mrs. Nowell was a member of the Dalton Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Frank W. Nowell of Minneapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Ray B. Noble of Pittsfield and Mrs. Alfred A. Beauregard of Clinton, Conn.; three brothers, George E. Watkins of Dalton, Walter W. Watkins of Petersburg, N.Y., and Ray E. Watkins of Clara Bell, Fla.; 4 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

Becket - Frank E. Nowell, 77, a resident of Becket for 20 years, died last night at Pittsfield General Hospital after a short illness. Mr. Nowell was the caretaker at Camp Watitoh. He was born in Charleston, S.C., the son of Frank and Anna (Elliot) Nowell. He attended the Becket Federated Church.

Mr. Nowell leaves his widow, the former Mary Watkins, and on son, Frank W. of Greenwich, N.Y. There are four grandchildren and six great grandchildren and one brother, Thomas W., of Denton, Md.

Lennox -  Mr. & Mrs. Frank E. Nowell of Becket, former residents of Pittsfield were honored at a surprise dinner party ay Blantyre, Saturday night on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. ...

Mr. and Mrs Nowell were married in Lebanon Springs, N. Y., Sept. 2, 1900. Mrs Nowell, 70, the former Mary W. Watkins, is a native of Dalton. Mr. Nowell, 72, moved from Charleston, S. C. to Dalton as a small boy with his parents. His father was a photographer in Dalton for many years. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Nowell took up residence in Pittsfield where he was employed for several years at the Post Office and later with the Pittsfield Electric Company. They lived at 77 Chickering Street. After spending several years in Pittsfield, the family moved to Worcester, where Mr. Nowell was employed as sales manager of the Coughlin Electric Company. He left Worcester in 1936 to become superintendant of Camp Watitoh.

Mr. and Mrs. Nowell's son, Frank E. Noewell, of Greenwich, N.Y., was toastmaster at the dinner attended by about 50 friends from Pissfield, Dalton, Becket and Chester. The honored couple were presented a purse and a gold rimmed glass bowl and candlestick holders.

Members of the Nowell family present included their son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Nowell and children, Nancy, Carol and Judy of Greenwich N.Y.; their son and law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hansons pf Abington and Mrs. Hanson's son Bruce Cramer who recently was graduated from Colgate University.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law Warren A. and Doris Seymour of New Windsor; daughter Marcia I. Porter of Myrtle Beach; daughter and son-in-law Irma J. and Stephen Wladkowski of Woodstock; three brothers and three sisters, all of Massachusetts; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Rose Evelyn Watkins Steadward passed from this life at the age of 106 on Saturday, 11 May 2013, at Barling, Arkansas.

Rose was born 19 January 1907, in Dalton, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. She was the 2nd child in a family nine girls, and two boys. She loved school from the very beginning. When she finished eight years at the local one-room school, she begged her father to let her walk the four miles to Dalton to attend high school. He let her go for two years, and then told her that was enough schooling for a girl.

She married Thomas Steadward in 1927 and raised five children in Holyoke, Massachusetts. She moved to California in 1963, where she served as a nanny. She moved from California to Novinger, Missouri in 1977 to reside with her daughter, Mary and husband Lorn (Bill) Chrisman. In March 2013, she moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas, with her youngest son Bob and his wife Linda.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents, George Urvin & Nettie Almira Hathaway Watkins, her husband, Tommy, her daughter, Mary Jean Chrisman, and her sons, Thomas (Dunk), Ray, and Jack.

She is survived by her son, Robert. Rose is also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was an avid reader and daily enjoyed crossword puzzles, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy on TV. Rose loved to dance, read, knit, and crochet. She a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many church callings. Rose was a natural caregiver and quietly performed many acts of kindness for others. Rose had a sunny delightful disposition with a quick wit, and a charming sense of humor. She was a humble yet brilliant woman who served as the matriarch of her family.

PITTSFIELD -- Ruth I. Pepin, 94, of 54 Sunset Point, Crossville, Tenn., died Monday at Wyndridge Nursing Home in Tennessee after a brief illness. Born in Hinsdale on Oct. 8, 1910 [sic], daughter of George and Nettie Hathaway Watkins, she was educated in local schools and was a resident of Dalton and Pittsfield for many years. She was a waitress at the former Rosa Family Restaurant on North Street for many years and retired in 1970. She later moved to Jasmine Lakes, Fla. with her husband, where she resided for 30 years, before moving to Tennessee this year. Mrs. Pepin was a longtime communicant of St. Mary the Morningstar Church.

On May 10, 1930, she married Arthur Pepin, who died Feb. 19, 1993.

She leaves two sons, Richard Pepin of the state of Florida and Douglas Pepin of Crossville, Tenn.; a daughter, Sandra Campoli of Pittsfield; two sisters, Rose Steadward of Missouri and Doris Engwer of Dalton, and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Ruth I. Pepin, 94, was called safely home on March 28, 2005.

She is lovingly remembered by her grandsons, Timothy and Christopher Campoli. She was predeceased by a grandson, Connell Pepin.

DALTON - Kenneth R. Watkins, 60, of 47 Chamberlain Ave., died today at Pittsfield General unit, BMC. He was born in Hinsdale and lived in Dalton most of his life.

He was a welder at GE for 36 years before retiring in 1973. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the GEAA.

He leaves his wife, the former Roseanna Baumann; two sons, Raymond R. Watkins of Windsor and Dr. George A. Watkins of Dayton, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Joseph E. Ulrich of Dalton; a brother, George of Easthampton; six sisters, Mrs. Rose Stedward of Azusa, Calif., Mrs. Orville Wyman of Marlboro, N.H., Mrs. Arthur Pepin of Pittsfield, Mrs. Donald Neelen of Phoenix, Ariz. and Mrs. Frank Pisiewski and Mrs. Gerald Engwer of Dalton.


Francis Charles Nevers

DALTON - Francis C. Neves, 62, of 39 Sunset Drive, a longtime GE employee, died yesterday at Hillcrest Hospital after a short illness. Born in Dalton, he lived here all his life. He was the son of the late Frank L. and Florence Tobin Nevers.

Mr. Nevers was educated in Dalton schools and was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church here. He was employed at GE for 37 years, most recently as a traffic specialist in the power transformer department. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and the GEAA, and the BerkshireCounty Traffic Association.

His wife, the former Mary Watkins, died in 1967. He is survived by two sons, Michael F. Nevers of Middlefield and John J. Nevers of New Lebanon, N.Y.; a daughter, Mrs. Michael C. Mason of Dalton, and eight grandchildren.

HINSDALE -- Grace Emeline Nealon Taylor, 88, of Cresthaven Drive, Belleville, Ill., formerly of Hinsdale, died Sunday at home. Born in Hinsdale on Oct. 6, 1916, daughter of George U. and Nettie Hathaway Watkins, she was a 1934 graduate of the former Dalton High School, where she was class secretary. Mrs. Taylor had been employed at the former Holden & Stone department store for several years. She enjoyed exercise and walked five miles daily until a stroke nearly nine years ago.

Her first husband, Donald E. Nealon, whom she married Nov. 1, 1935, died July 30, 1980.

She leaves three daughters, Dorothy Honiker of Belleville, with whom she resided, Margaret St. Pierre of Riverton, Wyo., and Christine Eaton of Pittsfield; two sons, Donald R. Nealon of Lenox and David E. Nealon of Rocky Mount, Mo.; three sisters, Rose Steadward of Novinger, Mo., Ruth Pepin of Croffville, Tenn., and Doris Engwer of Dalton, 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.

Cummington � George A. Watkins, 58, of 125 Pleasant St., Easthampton, former longtime local resident here, died this morning at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton after a long illness.

He was born in Hinsdale, son of the late George U. and Nettie Hathaway Hawkins and lived most of his life in Cummington. He moved to Easthampton two years ago.

Mr. Watkins was a disabled veteran of World War II. He served in the U. S. Navy.

Besides his wife, the former Ethel F. Cowlind, he leaves two sons, Christopher Watkins of Brocton and Philip Watkins of Easthampton; three daughters, Mrs. George-Ann Matueweski of Swift River, Mrs. Janice D. McCarthy of Easthampton and Mrs. Pamela Donovan of Charlemont; six sisters, Mrs. Helen Pisiewski of Dalton, Mrs. Gladys Wyman of Marlborough, N.H., Mrs. Rose Steadward of California, Mrs. Doris Engwer of Cheshire, Mrs Ruth Tepin of Florida, and Grace Nealon of Mesa, Ariz.; and one brother, Charles Watkins of Martinez, Calif.

ymouth, England, to Miss Ethel Cowlin, according to a letter recieved by his mother, Mrs. Nettie Watkins. Fireman Watkins is expects to return soon on leave, and his wife will follow as soon as arrangements are completed. He has been in the Navy since November 1943. Mr. Cowlin, the brides father, is in the British Navy, stationed at the same port as Fireman Watkins.

She worked at General Electric Co. in Pittsfield for 36 years, and retired as a secretary in 1983. Born and schooled in Hinsdale, she lived in Holyoke from 1947 to 1960. She moved here later, and was a communicant of St. Agnes's Church. Her husband, Francis "Frank" P. Pisiewski, died in 1993.

She leaves a son, Francis P. Jr. of Hudson; two daughter, Kathryn Fuller of Charlotte and Carol A. Francis P. "Frank" Pisiewski, 77, of 82 Carson Ave., a retired production coordinator for General Electric Corp., died Monday in Hillcrest Hospital. He worked for 44 years at GE, and retired from the ordnance department in 1986. Born in Pittsfield, he attended school in Windsor, and moved here 33 years ago. He was a communicant of St. Agnes's Church, and a member of the GE Quarter-Century Club.

He leaves his wife, the former Helen A. Watkins; a son, Francis P. Jr. of Hudson; two daughters, Kathryn A. Fuller of Charlotte, N.C., and Dr. Carol A. Aseltine of Upland, Calif.; a brother, Edward of Easthampton; five sisters, Stella Sadlowski, Anne Hood and Jessie Duda of Pittsfield, Mary Liley of Honoye Falls, N.Y., and Florence Knappe of Dalton, and four grandchildren.

DALTON - Doris Mae Engwer, 86, of East Deming Street passed away Sunday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox following a brief illness. Born June 17, 1924 in Pittsfield the daughter of George and Nettie Ha thawa y Wa t k i n s , she attended Dalton Schools. D o r i s worked as a waitress in many local e s t a b l i s h ments and worked in the nursing field for many years.

She leaves her husband Gerald K. Engwer with whom she recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, they were married April 16, 1946.

Doris is survived by her children David Engwer and his wife, Pam, of Plymouth, Mass., Judith LaPlante and her husband, Bob, of Springfield, Mass., Dianne Garvey and her husband, Mike, of Dalton, Mass., Darlene D'Avella and her husband, Buddy, of Pittsfield, Mass., Jerry Engwer and his wife, Sharon, of Florida, Mass.; sister, Rose Steadward of Novinger, Mass.; 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by six sisters and three brothers.

DALTON Gerald "Jerry" K. Engwer, age 89, of Dalton died on November 10, 2011 at Kimball Farms Care Center in Lenox. Born December 11, 1921, in Becket, son of Charles and Fanny (Culver) Engwer.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Engwer entered active duty with the Army Airforces on September 19, 1942 and was honorably discharged September 5, 1945. During his tour he flew 51 combat missions with the 13th Airforce, as a flight engineer on B-24 bombers, in the South Pacific. Mr. Engwer was awarded: Asiatic-Pacific theatre campaign ribbon with six battle stars; Air Medal with Eight Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious achievement in combat missions, Good Conduct Medal; Presidential unit citation ribbon; sharp shooter and marksman medals. In 2006, Jerry participated in the Veterans History Project, in association with the Dalton Counsel on Aging. His interview, that shares experiences, sacrifices and courage while serving our country continues to be aired periodically on local TV.

Mr. Engwer was employed by the MA State Highway Department for 37 years, retiring in 1986. Jerry loved nature and spent much of his early retirement years hiking, hunting and fishing. North Mountain at Holiday Farm was a favorite destination and where he spent several summers spotting for the Berkshire Mountain Bike Races. Jerry was a life long "Dodger" fan, but loved all baseball and attended many games of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was known in the community as an avid walker, a regular at Duff and Del's where he spent endless hours over coffee and with his friends, and his dry sense of humor was appreciated by all who knew him.

Mr. Engwer's wife, of 65 years, the former Doris Mae Watkins died April 24, 2011. Besides his wife Jerry was predeceased by three brothers: Lester Engwer; Norman Engwer; and William Engwer; and two sisters Marian Stutz and Jean Scott.

Mr. Engwer is survived by two sons: David Engwer and his wife Pam of Plymouth, Mass.; Jerry Engwer and his wife Sharon of Florida, Mass. Three daughters: Judith LaPlante and her husband Robert of Springfield; Dianne Garvey and her husband Michael of Dalton and Darlene D'Avella and her husband Buddy of Pittsfield: two sisters, Gloria Connnor of Dalton and Elsie Rucio of Pittsfield: 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
