October 5, 1967Mrs. Neva C. Gilson, aged 94, of Edmeston, died Thursday, September 28, at the Clark Nursing Home, Richfield Springs, following an illness of 10 years. Mrs. Gilson was born November 28, 1872, at the Talbot Homestead in North Edsmeston, the daughter of Arba C. and Amanda (Talbot) Talbot. She was married to Pert S. Gilson on September 7, 1898. He died in 1938. Prior to her marriage, she taught in the Edmeston Township District School. She was a member of the Edmeston Second Baptist Church and had been president of the former Edmeston Women's Club.
Surviving is a son Frank Gilson of Unadilla Forks, a brother, Wayne Talbot, Burlington Flats, and a niece, Mrs. W. Alfred Wietz of Ghent.
Burial was in Edmeston Union Cemetery.

April 15, 1958Bert Gilson, a highly respected resident of this village passed away Friday night of last week at the Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, where he had been a patient for a few weeks for treatment for heart trouble.
Mr. Gilson was born at Sanquoit, September 4, 1871, son of John and Delphine Brooks Gilson. He was married to Neva Talbot and they came to Edmeston to live about forty years ago, where he conducted a blacksmith shop and a small farm. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
His wife and one son, Frank of Utica survive.Interment in Union cemetery.

on of North Litchfield, was celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arba C. Talbot of North Edmeston, the parents of the bride. The Rev. A. Mac Callum performed the ceremony at 12 o'clock noon, in the presence of a company of relatives and friends who afterward partook of dinner with the bride and bridegroom. Mr. and Mrs. Gilson left in the afternoon for North Litchfield. All who know them most cordially wish this estimable young couple every happiness in their future life.

January 11, 1968Frank C. Gilson, 66, of Hackley Street, Unadilla Forks, died January 3 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, after a short illness. He was born in Edmeston July 5, 1901, son of Bert and Neva Talbot Gilson. He graduated from Edmeston High School, attended Cornell University and graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technolgy.
He was married to Gertrude Armstrong in Canajoharie on August 3, 1929. The couple had always resided in Unadilla Forks. Mr. Gilson was an architect and was employed by several firms in Utica prior to joining the Building and Grounds Division of the State Department in Albany. He served there for 20 years. For the past five years he was a member of the firm of Clark, Clark, Mills and Gilson in Syracuse.
Mr. Gilson was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston, the Winfield Masonic Lodge, American Institute of Architects, and the University Club in Albany. He was a veteran of World War II.
Besides his wife, he leaves an uncle, Wayne Talbot of Burlington Flats, and three cousins, Mrs. Alfred Wietz of Ghent, Mrs. Clarence Yule of Frankfort and Miss Ruth Gilson of Long Island.

October 9, 1978Unadilla Forks - Mrs. Gertrude A. Gilson, 78, Shelbourne, Vermont and a former Unadilla Forks resident, widow of Frank Gilson, died Friday at the Pillars Home, Shelbourne, Vermont. She was born in Unadilla Forks, September 16, 1900, daughter of Eugene and Mary Trenham Armstrong. She graduated from West Winfield High School and Oswego State Teachers College.
She was married to Mr. Gilson in 1929 and the couple had always resided in Unadilla Forks. She taught school in Rochester and Utica and at one time owned and operated a gift shop in West Winfield. She was a member of the Unadilla Forks Baptist Church, the West Winfield D.A.R., the West Winfield Chapter O.E.S., Unadilla Forks Book Club and Philathea Society and the Unadilla Forks Firemens Auxiliary.
She is survived by one niece. Mrs. Herbert (Ruth) Evans; three great nephews and several cousins.
Private funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at the convenience of the family from the Wilcox Funeral Home, West Winfield. Burial will be in Unadilla Forks cemetery.

February 15, 1968Wayne A. Talbot, aged 89, of Burlington Flats, died Sunday, February 11, at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson. Mr. Talbot was born March 10, 1878, in North Edmeston, the son of Abra C. and Amanda (Talbot) Talbot. He married Elizabeth Briggs on November 2, 1899 at West Burlington. Mrs. Talbot died in 1953.
Mr. Talbot operated a barber shop in Burlington Flats for many years and was a poultryman and cabinetmaker. Since September 1967, he lived with his son in law and daughter, the Rev. and Mrs. Alfred Wietz in Ghent. He was a member of the Burlington Flats Methodist church, where he was a former trustee and usher for many years. Surviving is his daughter, Mrs. Alfred (Gladys) Wietz of Ghent.
Burial will be in Burlington Flats cemetery.

September 18, 1953Mrs. Wayne A. Talbot, 74, was summoned into Life Thursday September 10, 1953 at her home in Burlington Flats after having suffered a stroke on the previous Friday morning, from which she never fully rallied. She had been in noticeability failing health about six weeks.
Nettie Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Briggs was born in Armada, St. Clair county, Michigan on October 1, 1878, the eldest daughter of the five children of Albert Sheridan and Lucy Ann Meeker Briggs. When she was three weeks old, her parents returned to New York state, and she spent her childhood in the vicinity of West Burlington.
On her sixteenth birthday, she taught her first day of school in the Tucker District in the town of Edmeston. Later she worked as a domestic in the home of Mrs. Bert Ackerman, Edmeston.
She was married to Wayne A. Talbot of North Edmeston in her parents' home in West Burlington on November 2, 1899, the late Rev. R. W. Lowry, pastor of the Edmeston West Burlington parish officiating. Church records show that she had united with the West Burlington congregation under the ministry of the Rev. Mr. Hartsock in 1895.After Mr. and Mrs. Talbot moved from the North Edmeston farm to the village of Burlington Flats in March, 1908, she worked as a seamstress. From 1913 to 1928 she maintained the Burlinton Flats telephone switchboard in her home, which was a tourist and boarding home also for a number of years. For many years she was correspondent for several newspapers. She had been employed as part-time postal clerk in the local office for many years.
At one time she was a leader of the Village Improvement Society, the Community Club, and was a member of the Home Bureau. Always she was a faithful and active member of her church - since 1907 the Burlington Flats Methodist church * and of its auxiliaries, and was a teacher in the Sunday school up to the time of her death.
In 1949 Mr. and Mrs. Talbot observed their Golden Wedding with an Open House.
They have one daughter, Gladys, now Mrs, W. Alfred Wietz of Rochester. One sister, Mrs. Bertha Maine of Leonardsville, survives; also five nieces, Mrs. Edwin Hewitt, Waterville; Mrs. Francis Reynolds, Mrs. George Colegrove and Mrs. William Janicki of Leonardsville; and Mrs. Fred Culley of Plattsburg; and three nephews, Laverne Maine, Leonardsville; Adrian Lashure, Whitesboro, and Donald LaShure, Utica.

March 30, 1972Mrs. Gladys T. Wietz, 69, of Burlington Flats, wife of the Rev. W. Alfred Wietz, died Monday, March 27, at the Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, following a extended illness.
Mrs. Wietz was born February 13, 1903 in North Edmeston, a daughter of Wayne A. and N. Elizabeth (Briggs) Talbot. She was graduated from Edmeston High School and Hartwick College. She was married to the Rev. W. Alfred Wietz on June 1, 1936 at Oneonta.
She had formerly been employed by the Otsego Mutual Fire Insurance Company. At that time she had been an organist at the Burlington Methodist Church for 25 years.
After her marriage she served with her husband in Lutheran pastorates in Ameram, N.Y.; Schenectady; Rochester and Ghent, and at the Lutheran Home in Clint. Mrs. Wietz was serving as correspondent for several area newspapers at her death. She was church secretary and organist at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church where her husband is the supply pastor. Ahe was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Ghent.
Surviving are her husband and several cousins.
Burial will be later in Burlington Flats Cemetery.

Talbot of Burlington Flats, became the bride of William Alfred Wietz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wietz of North Greece, in double ring services performed by the Rev. George H. Phillips, D. D., pastor of the church.

November 10, 1920Ilion - Nov. 10, - Mrs. Ida M. Coman, a resident of Edmeston, died at the home of her brother-in-law Hanan Coman of 342 East Clark St., about 3 o'clock this morning. Mrs. Coman has been in ill health for about a year. She came on a visit to her brother-in-law and suffered a third stroke yesterday which resulted in her death.
She was 66 years of age. Surviving are her husband George W. Coman of Edmeston, two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Whittemore of North Edmeston and Mrs. C. Rowlands of West Edmeston, and one brother, Floyd Talbot of Edmeston.

February 3, 1939Mrs. Mary Huestis passed away early last week Tuesday morning following an illness of four months. She was born in Edmeston, June 13, 1863, a daughter of Eben and Jane (Maxson) Talbot. Over fifty years ago she married Ralph Huestis who died in 1915. Mrs. Huestis was a talented musician, a member of the Methodist church, and acted as treasurer of the Missionary society for twenty years.
Mrs. Huestis is survived by one son, Lynn Huestis; a granddaughter, Elaine Huestis and a sister, Mrs. Winifred Porter of Evanston, Ill.Funeral services were held Friday from her home, The Rev. Russell Hawke officiating and burial beside her husband in Union cemetery.

June 11, 1945BELMONT - June 11, - Flags were flown at half staff over public buildings here today out of respect to Mayor Louis A. Barrett, 71, civic leader, member of two school borads and head of municipal government here since 1938, who died Saturday afternoon at his home, 1045 Ralston avenue, after a period of failing health.
A resident of Belmont for 31 years, he had been a member of trhe city council since 1936, and seven years ago succeeded Harold Danforth in the Mayor's chair. Mayor Barrett was retiring from the Sequoia Union High school district board after 10 years, having declined to seek re-election last month because of ill health. He was a member and had served as clerk of the Belmont elementary school district borad for 23 years.
Mr. Barrett, a native of Illinois, was a member of the United States Forestry Service for 38 yearsuntil his retirement in 1936, at which time he was assistant regional forester of district No. 5. He was a veteran of the Spanish American war, having served in the Philippines.
In lodge and service club work, he was a member of Plumas Lodge No. 60, F. & A. M.; the Society of American Foresters, and the San Francisco Commonwealth club.He leaves a widow, Mrs. Ruth L. Barrett; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Ross of Belmont; two sons, William A., of Plumas county amd Louis Jr. of Belmont; two brothers, Arthur and George Barrett; a sister, Mrs. Nellie C. August 26, 2010Frances S. Barrett entered into rest Aug. 20, 2010, at the age of 93, after a short illness.
Fran was born to Franz Xavier Meslang and Sophia Jewett McAllister on April 7, 1917, in San Francisco, Calif., where she was raised and attended Mission High School.
Fran met and married Louis A. Barrett of Belmont, Calif., in 1937. At that time they owned and operated a grocery store in Belmont with Lou's brother Bill Barrett. Between 1940 and 1943 Fran and Lou lived in Lovelock, Nev. where Fran was a homemaker and Lou was an accountant for a mining company.
From 1943 to 1967 Fran and Lou and their family resided in the San Francisco Bay Area; Portland, Ore.; Seattle, Wash.; and then back to the Bay Area as a result of Lou's career as an executive with Langendorf Bakeries. In 1967 the family moved to Calistoga when Fran and Lou became the managing partners of the Calistoga Spa. They were later joined by various family members who are still involved in the business. Fran and Lou retired from full-time involvement in the late 1980s. In their leisure time, Fran and Lou enjoyed extensive traveling around the world by air and around the country in their motor home.
Fran and Lou celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 19, 1997. Joined in Calistoga by their three children and their growing families,
Fran was predeceased by their eldest son Gary Barrett in March 1997, and her husband Lou in January 1998. She is survived by their daughter, Beverly More; son, Bradley Barrett; daughters-in-law, Mindy Barrett and Diane Barrett; grandchildren, Kelly and Mike Barrett, Shannon More, Rhonda Barrett and Keegan Barrett; and five great-grandchildren.
Fran was predeceased by her half-brother Alfred McAllister, brother David Meslang and sister Dorothy Loomis.

July 31, 1944Hinsdale - Augustus Bowman, 76, died Sunday at the House of Mercy, Pittsfield. He was a patient there for the last month, suffering from heart trouble.
Born in Germany, Mr. Bowman came to this country at the age of 1, with his parents, Alexander and Adeline Bowman. The family came to Hinsdale 50 years ago and lived on a farm on the North Road. The survivors are three sons, Robert of Lanesnoro, John of Pittsfield, and Frank, who is serving in the Navy somwhere in the Pacific, five daughters, Mrs. John McKeon, Mrs. Louise Roberts and Miss Isabella Bowman, all of Pittsfield, Mrs. Raymond Andrews of Dalton, and Mrs. William Danylieko of Hinsdale, with whom Mr. Bowman lived, two brothers, Frank of North Adams and William of Hinsdale. and 14 grandchildren.

April 23, 1943TYRINGHAM---Guy Tinker Roberts, 35, only son of Mrs. Lura T. Roberts has been reported missing by the War Department. He was en route to Greenland on a transport with 150 other men and was to be engaged in defense work. He left his home Jan. 19 and the next day sailed from an unannounced point. The first message received about him was on Feb. 16 reporting him missing. His mother and his wife, the former Louise Bowman live in Tyringham. His father, Herbert Roberts, died in 1911.

January 1, 2013Adaline E. Andrew, 103, formerly of Mill Street in Dalton, passed away December 28, 2012, at the Springside Nursing Home where she was a resident for three years.
Born February 15, 1909 [sic] in Hinsdale, she was the daughter of Augusta and Myra Watkins Bowman. She attended Hinsdale and Dalton schools, Adaline worked at Crane and Company before marriage. She married Raymond Thomas Andrew February 20, 1926. He died March 29, 1992. She was the oldest member of the Dalton Congregational Church where she was active, most recently in Sew and Such.
She is survived by three children, Tomas Andrew and his wife Ruth of Cheshire, daughter Nancy Smith and her husband William of Dalton, daughter Mary Reese and her husband George of Pittsfield. She is survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchil
She was predeceased by her three brothers, Robert, John and Frank Bowman, four sisters, Olive Jordan, Louise Roberts, Isabelle Bowman and Mary (Mayme) McKeon.

Miss Bowman worked at Crane & Co. for 47 years in the Finishing Department, retiring in 1973. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Born in Lenox, the son of Mary Watkins Joyner and the late Harry Joyner, he had lived in Lenox and Lenox Dale all of his life. He was a retired employee of the Peter J. Schweitzer Paper Co., and was a member of the Lennox Grange.

February 21, 1977LENOX - Charles A. Joyner, 78, of Ajo, Ariz., a retired inspector for General Electric Co., and a longtime local resident, died Friday at the New Cornelia Hospita in Ajo, following a long illness.
Born here, he was the son of the late Harry A. and Mary Watkins Joyner. He lived here until six years ago, when he moved to Otis. He and his wife, the former Leda Stanard, moved last September to Ajo.
Mr. Joyner worked for 22 years as an inspector in the receiving department of General Electric Co. until his retirement in 1963.
Mr. Joyner and his wife would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Charles Joyner of Lee and Eugene Joyner of Ajo, Ariz.; two brothers, George A. Joyner of Rome, Ga., and J. Edgar Joyner of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Farrington and Mrs. Mary Beechman, both of Lenox, and Mrs. Louise Tyler of Lee, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

March 16, 1973LEE - John R. "Tom" Tyler Jr., 70, of 9 Laurel St. died this morning at Pittsfield General unit, BMC, after a long illness.
A native of Northampton, he came to Lee as a child. He was employed as a linesman for 29 years by the Western Mass. Electric Co., until 1950. Later he worked at the former Lee Steam Laundry, retiring in 1961. Mr. Tyler was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
Survivors are his wife, the former Louise Joyner; a son Thomas R. Tyler of Pittsfield of Pittsfield; five daughters, Mrs. Chris Pereglou of Lenox Dale, Mrs. Albert Wellington of Roanoke, Va., Mrs. Glen Bentley of Powanal, Vt., and Mrs. Joyce Leydet and Mrs. Carlton Vreeland, both of Lenox Dale; two brothers, Charles Tyler of Savannah, Ga., and George Tyler of Brandon, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Marion Stairs of Manchester, Conn.; twenty four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

March 12, 2005LENOX -- Dorothy E. Farrington, 98, of 40 Sunset Ave., formerly of Turnure Terrace, died Thursday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 21, 1906, daughter of Harry and Mary Watkins Joyner, she grew up in Lenox and was educated there. She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Willard H. Farrington, died in 1953.
She leaves a brother, J. Edgar Joyner of Jacksonville, Fla. She was predeceased by a son, Willard H. Farrington, who died Sept. 23, 2000.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Dorothy requested that she be cremated and that her remains be interred in Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox. She leaves her daughter-in-law, Rita Farrington of Brooksville, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.

Born Sept. 9, 1912, in Lenox Dale, son of Harry A. and Mary E. Joyner, he attended Lenox schools and graduated from Stetson University in Deland, Fla. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked for the Florida State Employment Service for 25 years before retiring. Mr. Joyner was a member of Beach United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, and performed with "The Singers By The Sea" for more than 15 years. He was an avid golfer, shooting his age many times.
He leaves his wife, Jean Hancock Joyner, whom he married February 1988. In addition to his wife and son, of Lenox Dale, he leaves two other sons, John E. Joyner of Castleton, N.Y., and Richard E. Joyner, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Ginger Boettcher, of Austin, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by three brothers, Fred, Charles and George Joyner; and three sisters, Mary Beechman, Louise Tyler and Dorothy Farrington.

November 16, 2011Jean H. Joyner passed away Sunday morning, November 13, 2011 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. She lived in Jacksonville, FL and was a member of the Jacksonville Beach Methodist Church before moving to Statesboro.
Survivors include one son and a daughter in law; Douglas and Lee Carroll of Statesboro.

September 15, 2004LENOX -- Mary V. Beechman, 89, of 40 Sunset Ave. died yesterday morning at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center, where she had resided since Sept. 30, 2002.
Born in Lenox Dale on May 19, 1915, daughter of Harry A. and Mary Watkins Joyner, she attended the former Lenox Dale Grammar School and Lenox High School. Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Beechman had been employed at the former Monument Mills in Housatonic in her youth.
Her husband, Walter Beechman, whom she married Jan. 17, 1937, died March 4, 1998.
She leaves a son, Stanley E. "Skip" Joyner of Lenox; a brother, J. Edgar Joyner of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Farrington of Lenox; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Another son, Walter "Butch" Beechman, died in 1962.FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mrs. Mary V. Beechman, lovingly known to family and friends as "Ma," died Sept. 14, 2004.
Mrs. Beechman is also survived by her grandchildren, Allan E. Joyner and Karen L. Joyner, both of Lenox, and her great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Richard Carpenter, Jason Joyner and Allison Joyner Kearns and her husband, Tim. Also her beloved daughter-in-law, Claudine C. Joyner, and her granddaughter-in-law, Martha E. Joyner.

May 4, 1994Violette B. Apthorp accumulated more hours at Meridia Huron Hospital than any other volunteer in its history. She donated 24,000 hours over a 52-year period. It was known as Huron Road Hospital when she started her service there.
Mrs. Apthorp, 92, died Sunday at the A.M. McGregor retirement home in East Cleveland. She was born in the suburb. She spent her summers in Madison. She graduated from Laurel School and from Beaver College in Pennsylvania.
In 1923, she married Grant T. Apthorp, who worked in the East Cleveland city engineer's office. He later became finance manager and city manager. He died in 1973. When her husband enlisted in the Army during World War II, Mrs. Apthorp taught at Kirk Junior High School and Shaw High School in East Cleveland and in Shaker Heights schools. The Apthorps made their home on Glynn Dr. Mrs. Apthorp moved to the McGregor Home in September.
Mrs. Apthorp is survived by sons, Grant B. of Madison, Thomas D. of Chardon and Barney T. of Thiensville, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
