29799. Cyrus Eugene Beavens

Waseca Herald
August 8, 1913

Charles Ketchum, who lives north of town, received a telegram Tuesday morning stating that his son-in-law, F. C. Beavens was dead. He and Mrs. Ketchum went to St. Paul yesterday to attend the funeral.

Tuesday’s Pioneer Press states that Beavens went into a saloon at the corner of Third and Wanasha streets Monday afternoon, placed $2 on the bar and called for a drink. After taking the drink he said: “It’s my last drink boys,” and started for the back door. He said he had some trouble with his wife. When he reached the door, he pulled a revolver which he bought a few minutes before in a pawn shop. He fired one short at a little black dog named Bud which accompanied him, missed the dog and then turned the gun on himself. The first shot went wild and the next penetrated the right side of his head causing a wound from which he died an hour later at the city hospital.

Beavens, who was married to a daughter of Charles Ketchum, was well known in this city, where he lived until about four years ago. He was employed by the Cobb Commission Co. in St. Paul. He and his wife were here on a visit last month. He told friends here that he was doing well and seemed happy and contented. He was not drinking then, and said he had cut out liquor long ago. He is survived by his widow and four children, the oldest 12 years, who are entitled to sympathy in their sorrow.

The remains were brought to this city today and will be buried in Woodville cemetery.
